Birmingham City’s proposed new stadium is a 62,000-capacity concept for Bordesley Green, but it is not yet approved or under construction. The Sports Quarter project is consulting local people and other stakeholders before a planning application; Birmingham City Council lists the 2030/31 football season as the planned completion period, not a guaranteed opening date.

What is the latest on Birmingham City’s new stadium plans?

The Sports Quarter has published concept designs for a proposed new home for Birmingham City FC. The project page describes a 62,000-capacity stadium at the heart of the wider Sports Quarter in Bordesley Green, East Birmingham. The concept is credited to Heatherwick Studio and MANICA Architecture, working with Steven Knight. These are design proposals, not an approved final scheme. Sports Quarter project page

Engagement and consultation with local people, fans, political representatives and planning officers are taking place before the project’s stated next step: lodging a planning application. Birmingham City Council’s executive report dated 27 January 2026 records a Planning Performance Agreement, a design competition and community engagement through Something Collective. Those activities describe work toward an application; they do not amount to planning permission. Sports Quarter project page; Birmingham City Council executive report, 27 January 2026

Where will Birmingham City’s new stadium be?

The proposed stadium site is in Bordesley Green, East Birmingham, within the Sports Quarter regeneration area. The stadium is one part of a much larger district proposal, rather than a standalone venue project. Sports Quarter project page; Birmingham City Council regeneration page

What do the concept designs propose?

A stadium for football and other events

The concept includes a retractable roof and moveable pitch, with the intention of accommodating football as well as major sports events, concerts and other entertainment. The project page also describes possible year-round public uses, including food markets, restaurants, cafes and children’s play areas. These are intended features and uses; they should not be read as a confirmed operating programme. Sports Quarter stadium concept

The project describes the stadium as a landmark drawing on the region’s industrial heritage and contemporary engineering. That is the project’s own promotional description, not an independent design assessment. Sports Quarter project page

A wider Sports Quarter

Birmingham City Council’s wider proposal includes a women’s stadium, an arena, training facilities and mixed-use areas alongside the main stadium. The council also discusses transport improvements in the district. Its report says around £400 million in expected government funding relates to a Metro extension and redevelopment of Adderley Park Station; it is not the stadium’s construction budget.
