Colorful leaves can bring as much lasting impact as flowers: they keep a planting visually lively between bloom periods and give you choices for sun, shade, containers, and garden beds. Start by matching plants to your site’s light, soil moisture and drainage, summer conditions, and local winter hardiness; then repeat or contrast foliage colors to make the combination feel intentional.
Choose color by site first
A plant’s color is only useful if it thrives where you put it. Before choosing varieties, check the conditions at the planting spot and compare them with the plant’s needs.
- Light: Note whether the location gets full sun, part shade, or shade. Some colorful foliage plants tolerate shade, while many silver-leaved perennials prefer sun.
- Water and drainage: Distinguish evenly moist ground from a dry, well-drained site. Drought tolerance is not universal across species or cultivars.
- Climate and season: Separate frost-tender annuals from perennials suited to your local winters, and account for summer heat and humidity as well as frost.
- Space and role: Check mature height and spread before using a plant as edging, groundcover, a container feature, a mass, or a specimen.
- Color duration: Foliage can remain decorative beyond a flower’s bloom period; flowers have more specific seasons.
University Extension plant lists are useful starting points, not guarantees for every location. Check local hardiness, invasive status, toxicity where relevant, and cultivar availability before planting.
Colorful foliage for sun, shade, and containers
Leaves offer a broad palette: silver, gray, gold, red, purple, and variegated patterns can create color even when little is blooming. University of Illinois Extension puts the seasonal advantage simply: “Flowers, as nice as they are, come and go, but foliage remains constant.” (University of Illinois Extension, Foliage.)

For part shade and shade
Coral bells (Heuchera) are a useful place to look for foliage color in partly shady landscape plantings. Clemson Cooperative Extension describes modern cultivars in chartreuse, peach, deep purple, silver, caramel, and red; its earlier example, ‘Palace Purple,’ has deep purple leaves and creamy white flowers. Cultivars differ, so match the specific selection to your light and local conditions. (Clemson Cooperative Extension, Heuchera – Coral Bells; published June 3, 2019.)
Coleus offers leaves in red, pink, orange, yellow, blue, lavender, purple, and white. The University of Missouri Extension lists it for full sun to semi-shade and notes that it tolerates shade, with sun-tolerant types available. It is frost-free-season material, so treat it as a seasonal choice where winters bring frost. Caladium, with red, pink, or white leaves, is listed for semi-shade to shade and is grown from tubers. (University of Missouri Extension, Flowering Annuals: Characteristics and Culture.)

For containers or mixed plantings, calico plant (Alternanthera) brings red, yellow, orange, or variegated foliage in several habits and sizes, but prefers full sun and is tender. (University of Illinois Extension, Foliage.)
For sunny, well-drained places
For a silver accent in a sunny site, Iowa State University Extension describes lamb’s ear (Stachys byzantina) as a perennial grown mainly for its leaves. ‘Silver Carpet’ is about 12 inches tall, stays silver, and does not flower. Silver mound artemisia (Artemisia schmidtiana) forms a roughly 15-inch clump with finely divided foliage. (Iowa State University Extension, Perennials with Silver Foliage.)

Licorice plant (Helichrysum) has silver-white, gold, or variegated forms. Illinois Extension describes it as a full-sun, dry-condition-tolerant tender annual, with shapes ranging from compact mounds to trailing plants—useful distinctions when selecting for a pot or bed edge. Colorful sedums can combine foliage and blooms: Iowa State’s older article describes ‘Vera Jameson’ with mahogany-red to purple leaves and late-summer pink flowers, and says sedums perform best in full sun and well-drained soil. Check current cultivar names and local availability before shopping. (University of Illinois Extension, Foliage; Iowa State University Extension, Perennials with Silver Foliage.)
Use flowers to add seasonal accents
Flowers can add vivid, timed bursts of color alongside foliage. Choose them by bloom season and growing conditions rather than assuming one combination works everywhere.

Annuals for a season of color
Missouri Extension’s annuals table includes many options with light, color, height, and seasonal or temperature notes. For example, zinnias are listed for full sun; pansies tolerate frost and prefer cool temperatures; and portulaca is listed for sunny sites, with heat and drought tolerance. Coleus and caladium also appear in the table, but their main contribution is colorful foliage. (University of Missouri Extension, Flowering Annuals: Characteristics and Culture.)
Hardy perennials for recurring bloom
Colorado State University Extension’s general selection table includes sneezeweed in red and yellow for August–September; iris in blue, red, purple, or white for May–June, with well-drained soil noted; and red-hot poker in orange, red, and yellow for June–August. Rose campion combines silver-gray foliage with pink, purple, or red flowers. These are selection examples, not universal regional recommendations; check local suitability. For a flower-and-foliage pairing, Iowa State describes Russian sage (Salvia yangii, synonym Perovskia atriplicifolia) as having gray aromatic foliage, lavender-blue late-summer flowers, and a mature size around four feet tall by three feet wide. By contrast, snow-in-summer has silvery leaves and white flowers in May, but does not tolerate prolonged summer heat and humidity. (Iowa State University Extension, Perennials with Silver Foliage.)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Combine colors without making the planting feel busy
Use repetition to connect a bed and contrast to create a focal point. Illinois Extension recommends repeating foliage colors in masses and varying leaf shape and texture instead of clustering identical textures together.
- Repeat one foliage color in several plants to create a visual thread across the bed.
- Pair gold or yellow foliage with purple leaves or blue flowers for a strong contrast.
- Use silver-white or blue-gray foliage as a blending color; Illinois Extension also notes that purple-bronze foliage works with blue-gray.
- Vary leaf shapes and textures within a color grouping so repeated color does not become monotonous.
Treat these pairings as design tools, not rules. A small planting may need only one foliage color repeated around a flowering accent; a larger bed can use silver or blue-gray to soften stronger contrasts.
Plan for fall and winter separately
Summer flowers and foliage do not by themselves provide year-round color. Woody plants can contribute fall and winter interest through leaves, fruit, and bark, while asters and other late-season flowers extend color later in the year. Virginia Cooperative Extension’s red-white-blue fall and winter planting guide was revised in January 2026 and is specifically for Virginia; its hardiness guidance should not be generalized to other regions. (Virginia Cooperative Extension, Patriotic Gardens: Red, White, and Blue in Fall and Winter Gardens.)
