The Guinness World Records entry for “Largest fridge” names the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a scientific accelerator in Switzerland—not a kitchen appliance. Its cooling system is vast because it keeps superconducting magnets cold enough to operate. Other machines called refrigerators, such as Fermilab’s Colossus, serve different research purposes, so “biggest” depends on what is being measured.
What does “biggest fridge” mean?
There is no useful single ranking across a particle accelerator’s cryogenic installation, a laboratory dilution refrigerator and a household refrigerator: they cool different things and their published figures measure different properties. A fair comparison first separates the categories.
- Record listing: Guinness World Records calls the category “Largest fridge” and lists the LHC. Its entry gives a mass of 10,080 tonnes and dates the record to 2008. That is the source’s record claim, not a ranking of domestic appliances. Guinness World Records
- Accelerator cryogenics: CERN describes the LHC as the world’s largest cryogenic installation. It cools accelerator equipment, especially superconducting magnets; it does not store food. CERN
- Dilution refrigeration: Fermilab’s Colossus is designed to cool quantum-computing and physics research components near absolute zero. Its purpose and method differ from both the LHC’s system and a kitchen refrigerator. Fermilab
- Household capacity: Whirlpool lists 30 cu. ft. for its WRFF3536SZ French-door refrigerator, a consumer-scale example rather than a competitor in the scientific record category. Whirlpool
How the LHC’s cooling system works
The LHC is a 27-kilometre particle accelerator. CERN reported in 2025 that 23 kilometres of it are maintained at 1.9 kelvin (-271 °C) using circulating superfluid helium. This extreme cooling allows the accelerator’s superconducting equipment to operate; it is not a measure of storage capacity in the household sense. CERN
At the surface, large compressors and cold boxes use heat exchangers and expansion turbines to cool helium to 4.5 kelvin. Cryogenic lines carry it underground, where further cooling brings the system to 1.9 kelvin. Superfluid helium then circulates around the accelerator’s cold components.

Guinness’s record entry says the accelerator has 9,300 magnets and describes them as first refrigerated using liquid nitrogen, then cooled further with nearly 60 tonnes of liquid helium. These figures belong to the record page’s description. Guinness World Records
The LHC upgrade: a dated plan
In an article published on 17 December 2025, CERN said two new, more powerful refrigerators were being installed alongside the eight required by the existing accelerator. The article described testing planned by the end of 2026 and an intended High-Luminosity LHC start in 2030. These are plans as reported at that date, not confirmation that testing is complete or that the schedule remains unchanged. CERN
Colossus: a different kind of giant refrigerator
Fermilab’s Colossus is a dilution refrigerator being built by the Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems Center (SQMS). Rather than using the conventional refrigerant-gas compression approach described for kitchen refrigerators, dilution refrigeration uses a mixture of helium isotopes to reach millikelvin temperatures.

Fermilab’s December 2022 feature describes Colossus as designed to provide 5 cubic metres of space at around 0.01 kelvin. The same article says its design targets are 10 times the cooling power and 15 times the volume at that temperature of standard commercial dilution refrigerators. These are design comparisons reported by Fermilab, not independently measured operating results. Fermilab

The size is meant to give researchers room to cool many quantum-computing and physics devices. The engineering challenge is not simply making a bigger cabinet: Fermilab describes a roughly 2-metre-diameter machine with a suspended stack of about seven plates, each progressively smaller and colder. Supporting a large payload while bringing every plate to its required temperature is part of the design challenge.
Matt Hollister, the project’s lead technical expert, said: “With the cooling power and volume that Colossus will provide, SQMS researchers will have unprecedented space for our future quantum computer and many other quantum computing and physics experiments.” The quotation appeared in Fermilab’s December 2022 feature. If you mean a refrigerator for a home
For a kitchen, the relevant measure is usable food-storage capacity, not the mass of a scientific installation or the volume available at millikelvin temperatures. Whirlpool lists its WRFF3536SZ French-door model at 30 cu. ft. and describes it as the largest in specified standard-depth refrigerator classes. That is a manufacturer’s product-page claim; it does not establish a world record. Availability may change. Whirlpool
How to compare “biggest” claims fairly
When two refrigerators or cooling systems are being compared, check that the figures describe the same kind of thing. Useful axes include purpose, usable volume or payload, operating temperature and cooling method. A capacity figure for a household appliance cannot be directly ranked against a cryogenic system’s mass, accelerator length or low-temperature research volume.
