The right ice maker with a water line depends first on where it will go and what kind of ice you want. A countertop model such as the Whynter IDC-221SC can connect to a water supply while taking up less space; undercounter machines such as Newair’s models are built for a more permanent installation and make clear ice. Compare ice style, storage, drain needs, plumbing requirements and ventilation—not just the advertised pounds per day.
Countertop or undercounter: which format fits?
“Ice maker with water line” can mean a compact countertop appliance with an optional direct connection, or a larger undercounter machine designed to be plumbed in. They are different installation classes, not interchangeable versions of the same appliance. A direct water connection also does not automatically mean the machine can operate without a drain: check the exact model’s instructions.
Countertop: Whynter IDC-221SC
Whynter describes the IDC-221SC as a countertop ice maker and water dispenser that can be filled manually or connected to a water main. Its product page lists bullet-shaped ice in two sizes, a 2-liter reservoir, 1.32-pound ice storage capacity and an included 12-foot water line. Whynter says no drain is required because melted ice water is filtered and reused. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. Whynter IDC-221SC product page.
There is an important discrepancy in the listed production figure: the page summary says “up to 26 lbs. of ice per day,” while its specification table lists “Ice Formation” as 22 pounds per 24 hours. Check the current product listing or documentation rather than treating either number as a settled rating.

Compare the features that affect daily use
| Model | Installation class and ice | Manufacturer-stated production | Storage and connection details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whynter IDC-221SC | Countertop; bullet-shaped ice in two sizes | Product page says up to 26 lb/day in its summary and 22 lb per 24 hours in its specification table; verify current documentation | 1.32 lb storage; 2-liter reservoir; included 12-foot water line; manufacturer says no drain is required |
| Newair NCI080SS00 | 15-inch undercounter or freestanding; clear ice | 80 lb/day, per Newair | Storage-bin capacity and connection details: not stated on the cited product page |
| Newair 18-inch undercounter model | Undercounter; clear ice | 62–100 lb per 24 hours, depending on conditions, per Newair | Storage-bin capacity: not stated on the cited product page; supply and drain components are listed as included |
Figures in this table are manufacturer claims, not results from a controlled comparison. Daily production and storage are different measures: production is an advertised amount made over time, while storage describes how much ice the bin holds at once. A machine with a high stated daily output may still need its bin emptied or replenished during heavy use. The cited product pages do not establish a common independent test, reliability comparison or energy-use ranking.
Check plumbing, drainage and ventilation before buying
Hookup requirements vary by model. The figures below are examples from specific manufacturers’ guidance, not universal requirements for ice makers. Use the exact owner’s manual for the selected appliance and follow applicable local plumbing codes. Have qualified personnel handle work beyond your experience or local rules.

Water supply and filtration
- Haier’s guidance for the appliance it covers calls for a cold-water inlet with ¼-inch soft copper tubing, a shut-off valve and continuous supply. It specifies a minimum pressure of 15 psig and static pressure no greater than 80 psig, with recommended inlet water temperature of 41°F to 90°F. It recommends a suitable filter, warns that softened water may produce white, mushy cubes that stick together, and says deionized water is not recommended. Haier plumbing guidance.
- For a different example, Sub-Zero’s Designer Series guide specifies a ¼-inch compression water connection, 35–80 psi supply pressure and 40–100°F water temperature. It calls for an accessible shut-off valve, says not to use self-piercing valves and requires an in-line filter where water has high sediment content. These details apply to the models addressed in that guide. Sub-Zero Designer Series guide.
Drain and placement
Some machines reuse meltwater, while others require a drain line. Haier’s covered appliance requires its drain line to be connected before use and sets routing constraints; Sub-Zero’s guide also specifies drain tubing. Do not assume that a direct water-line connection eliminates drainage work. Check whether the selected machine needs a floor drain, gravity drainage or another approved arrangement in its manual.
Undercounter placement also requires attention to clearance and airflow. Haier says its covered appliance may be freestanding, enclosed under a counter or built in, subject to ventilation and clearance requirements; it recommends leveling and keeping the front unobstructed for ventilation. Follow the appliance’s specific installation instructions rather than enclosing a machine based on dimensions alone. Haier installation guidance.

A practical selection checklist
- Measure the location. Confirm available width, depth and height, including any required ventilation clearance and access for service. For built-in use, verify that the model is rated for that installation.
- Choose the ice style. The Whynter example makes bullet-shaped ice; the cited Newair undercounter machines make clear ice. Select based on how you plan to serve and store it.
- Size production and storage separately. Estimate peak demand, then compare the manufacturer’s daily output claim with the listed bin capacity. Ask the manufacturer if a crucial storage figure is not listed.
- Confirm the connection plan. Determine whether the machine can be manually filled, requires a water line, or supports either method. Verify supply fitting, pressure, water temperature and filter requirements in the model’s manual.
- Plan drainage and shutoff. Identify the required drain route and locate an accessible shut-off valve. Check local plumbing rules and whether a professional installer is appropriate.
- Verify current details. Product availability, dimensions, included components and specifications can change. Confirm them in the current manufacturer listing and installation documents before buying or cutting cabinetry.
Why there is no universal “best” model
The countertop Whynter and undercounter Newair examples serve different needs: compact bullet ice versus higher-volume clear ice in a built-in or freestanding installation. The manufacturer-stated output figures are not directly comparable test results, and storage capacity is not stated for the cited Newair pages. Choose by footprint, ice type, actual bin size, plumbing and drain conditions, ventilation, and confirmed availability—not by a single production number.
Sub-Zero likewise distinguishes its standalone undercounter ice maker, which it says needs a water connection to perform properly, from other appliances that may be installed without one. That is a brand-specific statement, not a rule for every refrigerator or ice maker. Sub-Zero water-connection guidance.
