The best laundry room setup is the one that fits your space and the way your household does laundry. Measure first, then plan where supplies, sorting, washing, drying, and folding will happen. A reach-in closet may need vertical shelves and hanging bags; a larger room can make room for several hampers and a folding surface.

Start with the room and your routine

Before buying storage or planning cabinetry, take inventory of laundry supplies and measure the usable space. Note appliance dimensions, door swings, clear floor area, and available wall space. Accurate measurements help prevent a shelf, cart, or counter from obstructing access or movement. EasyClosets recommends measuring carefully and taking inventory before installing a custom system (EasyClosets).

Map the usual sequence: bring in laundry, sort it, wash and dry it, hang or air-dry items that need special care, then fold or stage clean clothes. Give each task a practical home rather than trying to fit every possible storage feature into the room.

Check appliance requirements before stacking

If stacking a washer and dryer would free floor space, check both appliance manuals for compatibility and installation requirements first. Some washers and dryers are not designed to be stacked, as Whirlpool notes in its laundry-room organization guidance.

Store supplies where you use them

Use wall and vertical space to keep detergent, stain treatments, and other everyday supplies accessible without crowding the floor. Whirlpool suggests shelves above appliances, shallow or door-mounted storage, and pegboards. The IKEA US laundry category also groups shelving, storage systems, cabinets, baskets, and laundry bags.

Open shelves or cabinets?

Open shelves make supplies easy to see and reach, while cabinets conceal containers and can give the room a less visually busy look. Choose based on available wall space, how often you reach for each item, and whether you want supplies visible. Shallow shelves can suit a narrow closet; in a room with more depth, cabinets may offer useful concealed storage.

Plus, it can also fit for small area at the end of the hallway as a bookcase or fit it for laundry room.
  • 【Adjustable Shelves】With adjustable shelves featured inside, this bathroom cabinet can effortlessly accommodate items of varying sizes. You can customize the storage according to your preference, keeping tall/large items alongside smaller ones for easy access.
  • 【Safety for Your Home】Built with high-quality particleboard, which is durable and not easy to deform, ensuring long time use. Plus, our cabinet can handle up to 25lb per shelf and it comes with anchor hardware to prevent tipping over or accidents.
  • 【Easy To Assemble】Our package comes with accurately labeled parts and large schematic drawings that clearly demonstrate the assembly process. All the essential structural hardware had extra pieces, in case you’re missing any.

Keep frequently used products near the task they serve: detergent by the washer and dryer sheets by the dryer are examples Whirlpool gives. Store less-used items higher or farther away, while keeping any household products out of children’s reach as appropriate.

Choose a sorting system that fits the floor space

Sorting works best when laundry has a designated place before wash day. Multiple hampers or baskets can separate categories such as lights, darks, and delicates. If there is not room for several floor-standing baskets, labeled hanging bags offer an alternative, as described by Whirlpool.

OKZEST Slim Laundry Room Organization Cart with Upgraded Metal Hub Casters

  • Durable & Rust-Resistant: Made of premium alloy steel with powder coating for rust resistance. Mesh shelves allow airflow and prevent water buildup even in humid bathroom. Heightened diamond-pattern guardrails keeps items from falling off.
  • Easy to Move & Set Up: Equipped with 4 high-quality 360° swivel casters(Better wheel quality than alternatives) and an ergonomic handle, the rolling cart easily glides in and out of small space. Clear part numbers and easy-to-follow instructions make assembly a breeze.
  • Chic Wood-Metal Blend: Light natural wood tone top meets gloss white alloy steel frame for a crisp, modern industrial look that brightens your home effortlessly.
  • Use multiple hampers when the floor plan can accommodate them and you want categories ready to carry to the washer.
  • Use labeled bags when floor area is tight or a closet door can hold the sorting system.
  • Choose categories your household actually uses rather than adding bins that will go unused.

Before settling on a setup, consider how laundry travels from bedrooms to the laundry area and whether a full basket can be carried easily. A sorting system that blocks a doorway or is awkward to lift is unlikely to be convenient.

Make room for hanging and air-drying

Some garments need to hang or air-dry rather than go through a dryer. Options include a freestanding drying rack, a hanging or valet rod, and a retractable clothesline. Whirlpool and IKEA list drying racks; Whirlpool also describes rods and retractable lines, while EasyClosets includes valet rods among its custom-storage features.

Compare the options by fit and garment needs

  • Freestanding rack: Choose one if you have floor space and want a rack that can be moved or put away. Consider where it will stand while in use and where it will be stored afterward.
  • Rod or valet rod: A hanging rod suits garments that should dry on hangers or need a temporary place to hang. Check that there is enough clearance for clothes.
  • Retractable clothesline: It can keep the line out of the way when not in use, but requires a suitable mounting location and installation.

There is no standardized capacity comparison among these options in the cited sources. Select based on the clothes you need to dry, the room’s footprint, and whether you can install a fixed feature.

Add a folding or staging surface if space allows

A counter, small table, wall-mounted desk, or fitted folding station can provide a place to fold laundry, mend a garment, or stage clean clothes. Whirlpool suggests counters, wall-mounted desks, and small tables; custom-storage providers describe folding stations and fitted storage (Closet Factory; EasyClosets).

  • Easy Assembly: With all necessary hardware and clear instructions included, you can easily assemble this bathroom shelving unit in just a few steps, saving you from the hassle of complicated assembly processes.

In a compact room, a folding surface is optional. A cart or pull-out feature may be more practical if it can be moved or tucked away. In a larger room, a fixed counter can make the workflow easier to arrange, provided it does not interfere with appliance doors or access.

Choose ready-made storage or a custom system

Ready-made shelves, baskets, hampers, and racks can be assembled into a solution without designing a full cabinetry project. IKEA’s US laundry category shows examples of these component types, including shelving, storage systems, baskets, and drying racks. Check product dimensions and installation requirements against your measurements before purchasing.

Custom cabinetry may be worth considering when the room has unusual dimensions, obstructions, or a larger renovation scope. EasyClosets describes measured systems with adjustable shelving, pull-out hampers, valet rods, and wire baskets. Closet Factory describes cabinetry, built-in hampers, folding stations, and accessories; available options and materials may vary by location. Custom work is one route to a fitted layout, not a prerequisite for an organized laundry area.

Build the setup in a practical order

  1. Measure and inventory. Record appliance footprints, doors, usable wall and floor area, and the supplies or equipment you need to store.
  2. Decide how laundry will be sorted. Pick multiple baskets or labeled hanging bags based on available space and household categories.
  3. Place everyday supplies near their tasks. Use shelves, cabinets, or shallow storage, keeping frequently used products accessible by the relevant appliance.
  4. Choose a drying location. Match a rack, rod, or retractable line to the garments you handle and the room’s footprint.
  5. Add a folding surface or cart only if it fits the workflow. Keep appliance access and pathways clear.
  6. Confirm appliance compatibility before stacking. Follow the washer and dryer manuals and their installation instructions.
