If it was just installed or moved, check for shipping bolts first. Then confirm the machine is stable, redistribute an uneven load if the manual allows, and look for hoses or nearby objects making contact. Persistent or severe vibration calls for model-specific support or a qualified technician.
1. If the washer is new or recently moved, check for shipping bolts
Shipping bolts and other packing retainers secure the drum for transport. Leaving them in place can cause severe vibration and noise, and LG warns that operating a washer with them installed may permanently damage it. Check the installation instructions for your exact model before using the washer. LG’s guidance says the drum should have some forward-and-back movement; Samsung notes that almost no movement may indicate shipping bolts are still fitted. These observations are clues, not substitutes for the model’s instructions.
Remove bolts and packing only as the manufacturer directs, using the specified tools, and fit the supplied hole caps where instructed. Do not run the washer with shipping bolts installed or improvise a removal procedure. LG’s installation guidance and Samsung’s washer-vibration troubleshooting explain their respective checks.
2. Check whether the washer is level and stable
A washer that rocks or has a foot out of contact with the floor can vibrate more during spin. Put a small bubble level on top of the machine and check both side-to-side and front-to-back alignment. Confirm that all four feet rest firmly on a solid, flat surface. Press gently at opposing corners: if the washer rocks, adjust the feet according to the manual, then tighten the lock nuts. Recheck level and stability after adjustment.

Flexible, uneven or soft flooring can contribute to movement; carpet is also unsuitable for some installations. A level can identify alignment, but it cannot fix a flexible floor or a loose, damaged machine. Follow the washer’s installation instructions for approved surfaces and adjustment steps. Do not tilt or lift a washer alone; LG cautions that tilting it back should be done by two people. See LG’s leveling guidance and Whirlpool’s front-load vibration guidance.
3. Consider the load and selected cycle
An uneven load can gather on one side of the drum and produce pounding or vibration. A single small item may be hard to balance, while bulky, absorbent items can tangle together. Rugs, blankets, mats and waterproof fabrics may be especially likely to make a tub lopsided, according to LG. Do not assume a particular fill percentage works for every washer: capacity and cycle guidance vary by model.

- If the washer permits it, pause the cycle and spread the items around the drum.
- Choose a cycle intended for the fabric and load type. For a bulky or tangled load, follow the manual’s recommendations; reducing spin speed may help in some situations.
- For future loads, follow the manual’s instructions on load size and mixing items rather than washing one difficult-to-balance item by itself.
Samsung notes that small loads can collect on one side and that bulky absorbent items can tangle. Its guidance also notes that some vibration can occur during weight sensing or when a pedestal or riser is used. That does not make severe or continuing movement something to ignore. Samsung’s troubleshooting page and LG’s load and vibration guidance give brand-specific details.
4. Look for hoses, objects or debris causing rattles
A sound that seems to come from inside the washer may actually be a hose, a nearby object or a small item striking a surface. With the washer safely stopped, check whether the inlet or drain hoses hit the cabinet during operation. Move objects that touch or lean against the machine. Inspect the drum for loose items such as coins, and check the filter only if your model’s manual describes how to access it safely.

GE says a clogged drain pump can contribute to shaking on some models, but a vibration symptom alone does not establish that the pump is clogged. Do not open panels or attempt internal repairs based only on noise. Consult your manual for any user-accessible cleaning procedure, or ask the manufacturer or a technician. 5. Test after basic corrections, then escalate if needed
Once you have corrected a confirmed installation or load issue, use the test recommended for your model. Samsung suggests a test cycle after checking shipping bolts, load size or leveling. GE says an empty rinse-and-spin cycle can help distinguish a load imbalance from vibration that occurs with the machine itself. Use these checks only if the manual permits them; stop the cycle if the washer moves severely or appears unsafe.

If shaking remains after the installation, load, hose and accessible-obstruction checks, contact the washer’s manufacturer or a qualified appliance technician. A symptom alone cannot identify an internal fault, and advice about parts or service procedures is model-specific.

Higher spin speeds naturally produce more noise and vibration than slower parts of a cycle. Electrolux says moderate extra sound during spinning is normal. GE Appliances says movement up to 1/4 inch may occur occasionally on its machines; that is GE’s brand-specific guidance, not a universal tolerance for all front-load washers. Treat severe banging, repeated walking or vibration that continues after basic checks as a reason to investigate rather than relying on either statement as a pass/fail threshold.
