The best frost-free freezer is the one that fits your storage needs, available space and preferred way of organizing food—not necessarily the largest or most feature-packed model. For convenient access and less manual defrosting, compare frost-free uprights; for bulk storage and potentially lower energy use, consider a chest freezer. Check each exact model’s defrost type, dimensions, EnergyGuide estimate and location requirements before buying.
What does frost-free mean on a freezer?
“Frost-free” or “self-defrosting” generally means the freezer automatically manages frost buildup, so you do not have to defrost it manually as part of routine upkeep. That convenience can be useful if you open the freezer often or do not want to schedule manual defrosting. It does not mean every model has identical features or energy use: confirm the defrost type on the specific model’s product specification sheet. Consumer Reports explains freezer selection considerations in its freezer buying guide, and Whirlpool provides a freezer comparison chart.
Upright or chest: which freezer fits your household?
| Consideration | Upright freezer | Chest freezer |
|---|---|---|
| Access and organization | Front-opening door and shelves make contents easier to arrange and reach. | Top-opening design can make it harder to see and retrieve items, though baskets may help organize smaller items. |
| Opening the freezer | More cold air can escape when the front door is opened. | Usually lets less cold air escape when opened. |
| Space | Typically uses a smaller floor footprint for a given storage purpose, but allow room for the door to swing open. | Needs enough floor area for its broad footprint and room to open the lid. |
| Approximate energy use and cost | ENERGY STAR reports about 395 kWh per year and about $60 per year to run for a certified upright freezer. | ENERGY STAR reports about 215 kWh per year and about $30 per year to run for a certified chest freezer. |
The energy-use and running-cost figures are ENERGY STAR’s approximate category averages on its freezers page, accessed in 2026; they are not promises for an individual model. Electricity rates, freezer size and model efficiency affect actual costs, so use the specific unit’s EnergyGuide label for comparison. ENERGY STAR says its certified freezers are at least 10% more energy efficient than the federal minimum standard.
How much freezer capacity do you need?
Start with the food you expect to store and how often you shop, then compare that need with a model’s usable capacity. Avoid buying substantially more capacity than you will use: the U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (DOE FEMP) cautions that an oversized freezer costs more to buy, takes up more room and wastes energy when capacity goes unused.

Before choosing a capacity, measure the intended location and the route into it. Check the freezer’s exterior width, depth and height, along with required clearance, door or lid opening space, and any delivery-path turns or narrow doorways. A capacity that looks right on paper is not useful if the appliance cannot be placed or opened comfortably.
What to check before buying a specific model
- Defrost type: Confirm that the exact model is frost-free or self-defrosting if automatic defrost is a requirement.
- EnergyGuide estimate: Compare annual energy use and estimated cost for models of similar capacity; local electricity rates affect actual running cost.
- ENERGY STAR status: Check whether the precise model is certified. You can search the ENERGY STAR certified freezer finder.
- Placement range: If the freezer will sit in a garage or unheated room, verify the model’s documented ambient operating-temperature range and garage suitability. Do not assume every freezer can operate reliably in those conditions; Consumer Reports also advises considering where a freezer will be placed.
- Storage and controls: Check the supplied shelves or baskets, temperature controls, and any lock or alarm you need. These vary by model.
- Ownership details: Review warranty coverage, service availability, delivery requirements and return terms for the exact model and seller.
What temperature should a freezer be set to?
DOE FEMP recommends setting a freezer between -5°F and 0°F. Its guidance was updated in December 2023; follow the manual for the freezer you choose if it specifies different operating or setting instructions. See DOE FEMP’s residential freezer guidance.

- Set a realistic capacity: Match usable space to the food you expect to keep frozen rather than buying extra volume you are unlikely to use.
- Confirm the fit: Measure the installation area, opening clearance and delivery route, then compare those measurements with the exact model’s specifications.
- Compare efficiency and placement requirements: Read the model’s EnergyGuide estimate, verify certification if relevant, and check its documented temperature range for the planned location.
- Check the practical details: Confirm the features, warranty, service, delivery and return terms that matter to your household.
The available evidence supports a category-level buying guide, not a defensible ranking of individual models as “best.” Model specifications, prices and availability vary; compare current listings and product documentation before deciding.
