Measure the post, decide whether you want wired or solar lighting, and compare the exact model’s outdoor rating before buying.
Plastic outdoor post lights: the two formats
“Post light” can mean either a full-height lantern mounted on a standard post or a compact cap that covers the top of a fence or deck post. They solve different installation and lighting needs, so there is no universal winner. The examples below are compared by published specifications, not by side-by-side testing.

Which light fits your post?
For a standard 3-inch post: choose a post-top lantern
The Westinghouse 61230 and 66875 are plastic/polycarbonate lanterns designed for standard 3-inch posts; the post is sold separately. Both accept a replaceable E26 medium-base bulb rated up to 60 watts, but neither manufacturer page gives a lumen output. The 61230 has a black polycarbonate housing and opal acrylic globe, measuring 12-3/4 inches high by 9-3/4 inches wide. The 66875 uses high-impact polycarbonate with clear textured acrylic panels and measures approximately 12-3/8 inches high by 8 inches wide. Their dimensions and globe appearance may help distinguish the desired silhouette; they do not establish a brightness ranking.
The 61230 includes mounting hardware and instructions and is described by Westinghouse as suitable for outdoor settings including coastal applications. That description is not a guarantee against corrosion or a published salt-spray performance claim. The 66875 includes hardware and instructions, and its page specifically states wet-location approval and UL/CUL listing. Those claims apply to that model and should not be transferred to another fixture.

For square fence or deck posts: choose a solar post cap
Harbor Freight’s LUMINAR OUTDOOR LED Solar Post Cap Lights (SKU 70240) are a two-pack of high-impact plastic fixtures. The included adapters are specified for 3-5/8 × 3-5/8-inch, 4 × 4-inch, 4-1/2 × 4-1/2-inch, and 5 × 5-inch square posts. The product specification gives dimensions of 4 × 6 × 6 inches per the page’s layout. Measure the actual post and check the manual before purchase rather than relying only on a nominal post label.
The product page lists 20 lumens, 3000 K, automatic dusk operation, and eight hours of runtime on a full charge. The 20-lumen rating makes this an ambient or accent-light option, not a documented primary security or path-illumination source. The listed runtime is conditional on a full charge; it does not establish performance independent of sunlight or operating conditions. Harbor Freight showed a price of $22.99 when its page was accessed on October 8, 2026; price and availability can change.

How to choose between wired and solar lighting
- Check the mount before the power source. The cited Westinghouse lanterns fit standard 3-inch posts. The solar set lists adapters for four square sizes. Confirm the shape and actual dimensions of your post.
- Choose based on installation. The lanterns use an E26 bulb and require a suitable wired fixture installation. The cap lights charge via solar panels and turn on automatically at dusk according to the Harbor Freight product page.
- Match light output to the task. The cap lights have a stated output of 20 lumens. For a lantern, choose a specific E26 bulb and check its lumen rating; the fixture’s 60-watt maximum is a power limit, not a brightness measurement.
- Verify the exact model’s outdoor claims. Westinghouse states wet-location approval and UL/CUL listing for model 66875; it lists ETL/CETL for model 61230. Harbor Freight states IPX4 for SKU 70240. These are distinct model-specific statements, not interchangeable guarantees.
Maintenance, warranties, and what to verify
The Westinghouse lanterns use replaceable E26 bulbs, so the bulb can be changed without replacing the whole fixture. The Harbor Freight page identifies an included lithium-ion battery and an integrated LED, but does not provide user-replacement instructions for either; consult the product manual rather than assuming the battery or LED is serviceable.
Westinghouse lists five-year limited warranties for both cited lanterns; Harbor Freight lists a 90-day limited warranty for SKU 70240. Check the current warranty terms for the exact model and market, including applicable exclusions. Product specifications may change: Harbor Freight explicitly describes its specifications as approximate and subject to change.

Frequently asked questions
Can I put a solar post cap light on a 3-inch round post?
The cited Harbor Freight SKU 70240 page lists adapters for four square post sizes, not a 3-inch round post. Check the product manual and the dimensions of your post before ordering.
Are the plastic lanterns brighter than the solar caps?
The cited lantern pages state a maximum bulb wattage but do not publish lumens, while Harbor Freight specifies 20 lumens for the cap lights. Those figures do not support a direct brightness comparison. For a lantern, compare the lumen rating of the particular E26 bulb you plan to install.
