For a 750-square-foot space, start with 18,000 Btu/h as a broad room-air-conditioner sizing reference—not as a portable-AC recommendation. ENERGY STAR places 750 sq ft in its 700–1,000 sq ft band and assumes an 8-foot ceiling. For portable models, compare the unit’s DOE-relevant SACC rating with its manufacturer-stated coverage and the conditions in your room before buying.
What size portable air conditioner do I need for 750 sq ft?
ENERGY STAR’s general sizing chart lists 18,000 Btu/h for rooms from 700 up to 1,000 sq ft, assuming an 8-foot ceiling. That chart is for room air conditioners; it does not establish that a portable AC with an advertised 18,000-Btu rating will cool 750 sq ft. ENERGY STAR’s room air-conditioner sizing guidance is best treated as an orientation point, not a portable-unit specification.
Portable AC ratings need a different comparison. Look for the model’s seasonally adjusted cooling capacity, or SACC, in current manufacturer documentation, and check the stated room coverage and its assumptions. A generic headline BTU number is not automatically comparable with SACC.
Why portable AC ratings are not interchangeable
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) requires manufacturers to use a federal test procedure for portable air conditioners. Its adjusted-capacity framework accounts for effects including heat transfer through the exhaust duct and infiltration. For applicable variable-speed models, the framework also describes full-load SACC, labeled SACCFull. Read the exact rating terminology shown for the product rather than treating every BTU figure as the same measure. DOE defines a portable air conditioner as a portable encased assembly that delivers cooled, conditioned air to an enclosed space and runs on single-phase electric current. DOE says standards were set in a 2020 final rule, with compliance required beginning January 10, 2025. Its page also reports a May 16, 2025 notice proposing to withdraw the prior determination that portable ACs qualify as covered products under EPCA. That notice is a proposal; the page does not establish that the withdrawal has been completed.
Check whether the room matches the coverage claim
A square-foot figure is only useful when the room resembles the conditions behind it. Before choosing a unit, compare the manufacturer’s coverage assumptions with the actual space:

- Exhaust installation: Confirm that the hose can reach a suitable window or door and that the included panel fits and can seal the opening as intended.
The sources cited here do not provide a portable-model-specific adjustment formula for these factors. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for the individual unit and room rather than applying an invented correction to the 18,000-Btu/h room-AC chart figure.
How to compare portable ACs for this space
- Find the SACC rating. Check the current product documentation and note whether the listed figure is SACC, SACCFull, or another rating. Do not substitute a marketing BTU number without confirming what it measures.
- Read the coverage conditions. Check whether the manufacturer’s stated area assumes a closed room or open plan, standard or high ceilings, moderate or strong sun, and ordinary or substantial heat loads.
- Verify the exhaust setup. Check hose length, window-panel dimensions, and whether the kit suits your window or door. Installation that cannot be sealed as intended may undermine the product’s stated conditions.
- Compare practical features. Review energy-use or efficiency information, noise, condensate handling, controls, portability, and warranty alongside capacity.
- Check the current listing. Confirm the exact model, its current documentation, price, and availability with the manufacturer or retailer before purchase.
A dual-hose configuration is one category worth comparing, but the available evidence does not establish that every dual-hose unit outperforms every single-hose unit in a 750-square-foot room. Compare model-level ratings and features rather than relying on hose count alone.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—identify
No specific portable-AC model has been verified here for SACC, stated coverage, current availability, or suitability for a particular 750-square-foot room. Naming one as the “best” would require current model documentation and a room-specific fit check. ENERGY STAR’s 18,000-Btu/h figure is useful context for room AC sizing, but it cannot stand in for that missing portable-model evidence.
DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program room-AC purchasing guidance explicitly excludes portable air conditioners.
