Start with the exact product in the EPA Safer Choice directory, then compare its ingredient disclosure and label with your needs. The available sources do not provide controlled, side-by-side cleaning tests or a hard-water ranking, so they cannot establish one detergent as best for every dishwasher.
What “green” should mean when choosing dishwasher detergent
“Green,” “eco safe,” and “environmentally friendly” are broad marketing phrases, not proof of a product’s environmental or health impact. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cautions consumers to scrutinize generic claims and points to Safer Choice as a way to identify products evaluated against its standard. EPA’s guidance on identifying greener cleaning products explains that distinction.
Safer Choice is useful evidence about ingredients and product requirements, but it is not a claim that a detergent has zero impact across manufacturing, transport, use, and disposal. EPA’s current Safer Choice Standard and Criteria, dated August 2024, describes ingredient review by functional class as well as product-level criteria.
How to check whether a detergent qualifies
- Search the exact product. Use the EPA Safer Choice product directory to look up the product name and company. Do not infer that every product from a brand carries the label. The directory is live, and its entries can include duplicates when a product is listed for multiple uses or types.
- Confirm the package and formulation. Match the directory entry to the product you intend to buy. Formulations and labels can change, so check the current package and manufacturer ingredient disclosure as well.
- Read what the label covers. EPA says each chemical ingredient in a Safer Choice product is reviewed, the product must meet high performance standards, and all ingredients must be disclosed on the product or an accessible manufacturer website. These are features of the program, not proof of identical results in every machine or water condition. See the Safer Choice FAQ, last updated June 8, 2026.
- Check fragrance separately. If you want an unscented product, verify the package and ingredient information. EPA has a separate fragrance-free designation for products that meet its criteria; fragrance preference alone does not establish certification.
What the evidence says about detergent options
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) lists products in its dishwasher-detergent category, including Green Llama Dishwasher Powder, Fragrance Free. The listing makes it a candidate to investigate if you prefer powder without fragrance; it does not establish that it cleans better than alternatives, confirm current retailer stock, or verify its current formulation or price.

EWG’s category also includes products or brands such as AspenClean, Blueland, Branch Basics, Dirty Labs, Dropps, Norwex, and Nellie’s. Treat that directory as a place to build a shortlist, not as a controlled head-to-head cleaning test. An EWG rating or listing is not an EPA Safer Choice certification, and neither should be read as proof that a product is the strongest cleaner.

Packets, fragrance, and performance caveats
Liquid detergent packets
EPA does not permit the Safer Choice label on liquid detergent packets because of potential exposure hazards, including incidents involving children. Do not assume a packet is Safer Choice certified simply because its brand has other certified products. This restriction is described in the EPA Safer Choice FAQ.

Fragrance-free choices
Green Llama’s listed powder is explicitly named “Fragrance Free,” making it a candidate if avoiding fragrance is a priority. Verify the current product package and disclosure before buying; an EWG category listing is not a substitute for checking the product’s present ingredients or any EPA label.
Cleaning results and environmental impact
EPA’s statement that Safer Choice products meet high performance standards describes a program requirement; it does not rank detergents against one another. The cited sources provide no controlled comparison of named products, no hard-water performance ranking, no independently verified cost per load, and no lifecycle comparison of powder, tablets, and soluble-film packets. Without product-specific evidence, claims that one form is definitively greener because it is lighter, plastic-free, concentrated, or dissolves a certain way are not established.

A practical shortlist checklist
- Can you find the exact product—not just the brand—in the current EPA Safer Choice directory?
- Does the package or manufacturer provide ingredient disclosure you can review?
- Does the form work for your household’s handling preferences, and does the fragrance status meet your needs?
- Are cleaning claims supported for your machine and water conditions, rather than inferred from a rating or certification?
- Have you checked current price per load and packaging details yourself? The cited sources do not provide comparable figures for these products.
