There is no independently tested “best” model in the available evidence, and a heavy-looking hasp alone cannot make an installation secure. Treat the hasp, padlock, fasteners, mounting surface and surrounding structure as one system.
What makes a hardware hasp secure?
A padlock can only secure an opening as well as the hasp and structure it engages. HUD’s Home Security Book Three: Choosing a Good Lock puts it plainly: “No padlock is any better than the hasp it engages.” HUD recommends a casehardened hasp and warns that exposed mounting bolts can be attacked. The U.S. Department of Justice’s historic training guidance likewise says a security padlock’s effectiveness depends on the quality of the hasp. These are general recommendations, not test results or guarantees against attack.
Think about the entire installed assembly: the lock must fit the hasp; the hasp must resist being pried or detached; its fasteners must hold; and the door, gate or frame must be strong enough to resist attack. A weak point anywhere in that chain limits the value of the other components.
How to compare hasps for a shed, gate or door
Match the shackle to the hasp
Check the hasp’s stated maximum accepted shackle diameter against the actual padlock shackle dimensions. A lock that cannot pass through the hasp cannot secure it, while an appropriate fit helps you avoid choosing by appearance alone. Confirm the specific model’s current specifications before buying; the dimensions below come from a Master Lock product guide and are catalog details, not independent performance findings.

Read the material description carefully
“Steel” by itself is not a security rating. Product descriptions may distinguish hard wrought steel from hardened steel, or identify a reinforced plate. Those details help compare construction, but they do not establish how a hasp will perform against a particular attack. HUD recommends casehardened hasps; verify what the manufacturer means by the material and treatment on the exact product.
Consider access to fasteners and prying points
Look for a design and installation that keep mounting bolts from being exposed when the hasp is closed and locked. Also consider whether the hasp’s geometry leaves accessible points for prying or cutting. The protection comes from the installed arrangement, not the product description alone.

Choose for the opening and environment
Compare the hasp’s length and geometry with the actual door, gate, shed or cabinet. Longer or heavier does not automatically mean more suitable: the hasp still needs to align correctly and mount securely. For outdoor exposure, ask the manufacturer about the exact material, finish, corrosion guidance and application limits. The available sources do not establish a general outdoor-durability ranking.

How to secure a gate or shed with a padlock hasp
- Check the structure. Make sure the door or gate, frame and mounting area are sound enough to support the installation. If the mounting material is thin or weak, plan for reinforcement rather than relying on the hasp alone.
- Position the hasp. Align its parts so they close properly and the padlock can engage without binding. Consider how the closed hasp covers its mounting bolts; HUD advises against exposed bolts when the hasp is locked.
- Use suitable fasteners. HUD recommends bolts rather than wood or sheet-metal screws. Fastener type and dimensions must suit the substrate and the specific installation; the guidance does not specify a universal bolt size.
- Reinforce weak material. For thin or weak wood or metal, HUD recommends reinforcing the back of the mounting surface with a steel plate. The backing and attachment should be appropriate to the opening and its construction.
- Fit the padlock and inspect the assembly. Confirm the shackle passes through the hasp and that the hasp closes and locks as intended. Check that the mounting is secure and the door or gate still resists force; a fitting lock cannot compensate for a weak frame or panel.
HUD’s recommendations are historic security guidance, not a current building code. For a regulated or specialized installation, check the requirements that apply to that use and location.

What should you look for in the padlock?
Start with a padlock whose shackle fits the hasp’s accepted diameter. Sacramento Police Department guidance recommends a strong steel hasp paired with a padlock and identifies a hardened shackle and locking at both the heel and toe as selection considerations. Treat these as features to compare, not universal certification criteria. The DOJ guidance also stresses that padlock effectiveness depends on hasp quality, so do not select the lock in isolation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you rank hasps by outdoor durability?
Not on the available evidence. A City of Hallandale Beach technical specification calls for Type 316 stainless steel hardware in a particular recessed padlock-hasp access-door assembly. That is an application-specific specification; it does not show that Type 316 is the best material for every hasp or outdoor setting. No comparative outdoor-durability study or general ranking is established here. Ask the manufacturer about the exact product’s material, finish and exposure limits when corrosion resistance matters.

When do specialized rules apply?
Ordinary residential guidance is not a substitute for rules governing specialized installations. Washington State’s archived WAC 296-52-70060 addresses attachment and padlock-protection measures for Type 5 explosives magazines. It is a narrow regulatory example, not a general rule for sheds or gates. Verify current law and applicable requirements before work on a regulated installation.
