The closest fit for a musty-smelling room is a portable air cleaner with particle filtration and a substantial amount of activated carbon—but it can only supplement the real fix. Musty odors can signal excess moisture or mold. Find and correct the moisture source, then clean up mold; a purifier does not remediate mold or guarantee odor removal.
Choose the right purifier configuration
For a musty-odor problem, compare what a cleaner can filter with what is causing the smell. Particle filtration and gas filtration are different jobs, and no current standardized odor-removal rating establishes which purifier removes musty smells best.

EPA summarizes the limitation directly: “Portable air cleaners and furnace/HVAC filters do not address the cause of mold and musty odors.” It also says a portable cleaner with high CADR and an activated-carbon filter can filter particles and gases. CADR, however, rates particle delivery, not odor-gas removal.
Size a portable cleaner for the room
Measure the room’s length and width to estimate its floor area, then compare that area with the cleaner’s smoke CADR. EPA’s general sizing table is based on an eight-foot ceiling; higher ceilings and open plans may call for more capacity. These are particle-sizing estimates, not odor-removal ratings.

EPA also gives a separate rule of thumb: choose a portable cleaner with smoke CADR at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet. This is particle guidance, not a measure of gas or odor removal. Both EPA sizing approaches assume ordinary room conditions; consider sizing up for ceilings higher than eight feet. Keep the unit where its airflow is not obstructed.
Evaluate carbon and other odor-control claims
Activated carbon can help capture gases, but amount matters. EPA says carbon can be effective when the filter contains a large amount of material; a product label that merely mentions carbon does not establish how well it will handle a particular musty odor. Look for the quantity of carbon or another gas-targeted medium in the product specifications and compare replacement-filter details.

There is no widely used performance rating system for filters intended to remove gases. Do not use a high particle CADR, a HEPA label, or an energy-efficiency mark as proof of odor-removal performance. ENERGY STAR’s mark indicates energy efficiency, not best-in-class odor removal or a health endorsement.
Avoid ozone-generating cleaners
Do not choose an ozone generator as an odor-removal shortcut. EPA says ozone at concentrations that do not exceed public-health standards has little potential to remove indoor contaminants, and that masking an odor with ozone does not mean the odor was removed. Ozone is a lung irritant.

Some ionizers, electrostatic precipitators, UV devices without adequate lamp coatings, and plasma cleaners may have ozone-emission potential. EPA points consumers to CARB and AHAM lists as resources for units tested to emit little or no ozone. Check the exact device and its claims rather than assuming a technology is ozone-free.
Check maintenance and ownership costs
Before buying, confirm the exact replacement-filter model and whether it is available. Check the manufacturer’s replacement schedule and cost, as well as energy use, noise, and placement needs. Filters require maintenance and eventual replacement; a cleaner with a useful particle rating but unavailable or costly replacement media may be a poor long-term fit.

ENERGY STAR criteria call for reporting filter type and replacement-filter model, along with measured CADR and power data. The current room-air-cleaner specification became effective October 9, 2025. Use those details to compare efficiency and reported particle performance, not to infer odor removal.

If a room smells musty, inspect for leaks, damp materials, condensation, or other moisture sources. Correct the moisture problem and clean up mold; a portable air cleaner may then supplement those steps by filtering some airborne particles and, where it has suitable gas-targeted media, potentially reducing some odors. It is not mold remediation, and it cannot resolve a continuing moisture problem.
