Its current materials describe ratings for more than 250 vacuum models overall and brand scores for stick and upright vacuums, but do not provide a central-vacuum model comparison. That means there is no substantiated Consumer Reports winner to name here. For a construction or renovation project, the practical choice is whether a piped installation suits the house, then whether the power unit, coverage guidance, hose connections, and service terms fit the plan.
What Consumer Reports says about central vacuums
Consumer Reports’ current vacuum overview describes ratings for more than 250 vacuum models, while its vacuum brand information describes scores for stick and upright vacuums. Neither establishes a central-vacuum ranking or identifies a best central system. The model coverage figure is for the general vacuum category, not central vacuums specifically.
Accordingly, this guide compares the documented decision points for selecting a system, not lab-tested winners. No independent central-vacuum comparison or verified current price comparison is established here.
How a central vacuum system works
A conventional central vacuum is a built-in cleaning system: a remotely placed motor and dust-collection unit connect to tubing that runs to wall inlets. You plug a hose into an inlet near the area being cleaned. InterVac describes typical power-unit locations as a garage, basement, or utility room, with tubing routed through walls and other available spaces.

- Powerful 700 AW Central Vacuum with 40 ft Low-Voltage hose and horse hair floor brush accessory kit included
- POWERFUL: 700AW, 5.7’’, 2-Stage motor — SOFT START-STOP TECHNOLOGY: Adds 20% to the life expectancy of your OVO central vacuum Motor
- SILENT SYSTEM: Integrated muffler and noise-blocking foam added in the MOTOR COMPARTMENT
- HEAVY DUTY: Covers up to 8000 square feet area, 8 INLET OR MORE
- HYBRID FILTRATION: Can be used with disposable bags ( Recommanded) OR Without - 1 permanent machine washable filter ( INCLUDED)
“Central vacuum” can also refer to a self-contained unit that does not need in-wall tubing. InterVac sells both types, so establish which installation style a product uses before comparing it with a piped system. See the manufacturer’s product information for its system descriptions and model details.
Choose the installation style that fits the house
Piped system with wall inlets
A piped system places the power unit away from the cleaning area and connects it to multiple hose inlets. In a new build, tubing can be planned alongside other construction work. InterVac says an existing home may be retrofitted by routing tubing through available areas such as attics, basements, and closets. Whether a particular route is feasible depends on the home’s construction and layout; the available information does not establish a universal retrofit method or installation cost.

Self-contained unit
A self-contained model avoids running pipe through the house. It may be a better fit when a piped installation is unwanted or impractical, but compare its placement and hose arrangement with the areas you need to clean. Do not assume its coverage or setup is equivalent to a multi-inlet installation.
Compare the details that determine fit
| Decision point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Home size and layout | Match the model’s stated coverage guidance to the area and floor plan. Manufacturer coverage figures are guidance, not independent performance validation. |
| Power-unit placement and exhaust | Check the selected model’s documentation for where the unit can be installed and how exhaust is handled. |
| Inlets and hose connections | Confirm the inlet diameter and any electrical or powered-brush requirements before buying a hose or tool. |
| Consumables | Identify the exact bags and filters required for the power unit, and check warranty conditions on replacements. |
| Warranty and service | Read the unit- and seller-specific warranty, including exclusions, service steps, and who pays shipping. |
Coverage figures are model-specific
InterVac’s current product information lists the Pro at 660 air watts and coverage of up to 3,000 square feet, and the Mini at 414 air watts and up to 900 square feet. Those are the manufacturer’s stated specifications and coverage estimates, not results from an independent comparative test. Treat them as a starting point for checking the model against the house, not as proof that one system cleans better.

Check compatibility before adding accessories
Hoses and tools do not necessarily fit every central-vacuum inlet. InterVac says its 32 mm hoses and tools fit some other brands’ 32 mm inlets, including Beam and Husky, but not 35 mm systems. Verify diameter and voltage against the exact system and accessory documentation before ordering.
Match bags, filters, and warranty terms
Use the correct consumables for the exact power unit. InterVac states that using non-genuine bags and filters voids its warranty; that condition applies to InterVac and should not be assumed to describe other manufacturers’ warranties. Warranty coverage and service obligations vary by product and seller. For example, CentralVac’s warranty information describes limited terms, conditions, and exclusions; check the applicable document for the system you are considering rather than generalizing those terms.

A practical selection sequence
- Decide on installation style. Determine whether you want a piped system with multiple wall inlets or a self-contained unit that avoids in-wall pipe.
- Map the areas to be cleaned. Consider the home’s floor plan and the locations where hose access will be useful; compare these with the manufacturer’s model-specific coverage guidance.
- Plan the power unit and exhaust. Use the selected model’s installation documentation to confirm a suitable location and exhaust arrangement.
- Confirm connection and brush requirements. Match inlet diameter and voltage to the hose, tools, and any powered brush you intend to use.
- Check ongoing ownership terms. Verify the bags and filters required for the exact unit and read its warranty and service conditions.
What to look for when buying
A complete power unit is the central product to compare; related categories include central-vacuum hose kits, bags, filters, installation supplies, brushes, and repair parts. These accessories are model-dependent, so confirm fit before purchase. Product catalogs show that such parts are available, but current retailer listings and prices are not established here. The CentralVac catalog is one supplier source for system and parts information.
