The best downdraft cooktop is the one that fits your fuel preference, countertop and cabinet layout, and exhaust route. Current manufacturer listings include induction, gas, and electric cooktops with integrated downdraft ventilation, as well as separate pop-up vents. There is no verified head-to-head test establishing one model as best overall, so use the shortlist below to narrow options and confirm installation details before buying.

How to choose a downdraft cooktop

Start with the kitchen plan, not the airflow number. A downdraft system draws cooking fumes downward, so the choice affects the cooking surface, counter and cabinet space, and the route for ductwork or recirculated air.

  1. Choose a fuel type. Decide whether you want induction, gas, or electric; documented downdraft choices exist in all three categories, but availability varies by model and geography.
  2. Check the available width. The examples below include 30- and 36-inch products. Nominal width is not the required cutout size.
  3. Choose the vent format. An integrated system places ventilation in the cooktop; a separate pop-up vent is installed in the counter and retracts when not in use.
  4. Confirm the exhaust plan. Determine whether the exact model can be ducted outdoors or recirculated, and identify any required blower, filter, transition, or conversion kit.
  5. Review the installation manual. Verify cutout, clearances, cabinet depth, utility connections, blower location, and duct path for your specific model.

Manufacturer-listed options by type

These are examples with specifications published by their manufacturers, not a tested ranking. Confirm current regional availability and accessory compatibility on the product page and in the current manual.

Option Documented details What to verify
JennAir NextGen induction JennAir lists 30-inch JIDT730SBL and 36-inch JIDT836SBL downdraft induction cooktops. Its catalog also includes gas and electric downdraft models. JennAir downdraft cooktops Exact cutout and clearance requirements, plus model-specific ventilation configuration and accessories.
Elica NikolaTesla Invert induction Elica specifies a 36-inch model with 600 CFM extraction and dimensions of 36 1/16 × 22 9/16 × 10 3/16 inches. A long-life carbon-ceramic filter kit is available for recirculation. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance results. Elica NikolaTesla Invert Confirm the exact installation dimensions and compatible recirculation components for the intended layout.
KitchenAid gas downdraft KitchenAid documents 30- and 36-inch options; the 30-inch option has four burners and the 36-inch option adds a fifth. The duct-free conversion kit is sold separately. KitchenAid downdraft cooktops Check gas supply, cutout, and whether the conversion kit suits the proposed installation.
Whirlpool separate pop-up downdraft Whirlpool lists separate 30- and 36-inch countertop-installed vents that retract below the counter. Its comparison chart gives listed models a 600 CFM motor class and cautions that “Performance varies based on installation.” Whirlpool downdraft ventilation Allow for the separate unit’s counter and cabinet space; verify blower, ducting, and the cooktop’s compatibility.
Fisher & Paykel Series 9 induction The manufacturer lists a 36-inch four-zone induction cooktop with integrated ventilation, nine fan speeds, and a boost function. Fisher & Paykel Series 9 Confirm the current installation documentation, ventilation mode, and required components.

Integrated ventilation or a separate pop-up?

Integrated downdraft

The vent is part of the cooktop, as in the Elica and Fisher & Paykel examples. This keeps the system centered on one appliance footprint, but does not remove the need to plan for the vent’s cabinet and duct requirements. Check the installation guide for the complete dimensions and service clearances.

#1 Best Overall
GASLAND CHEF COLLECTION 31.5" Electric Downdraft Cooktop, 4 Burner, 220V
  • Built-in Downdraft Ventilation: The integrated downdraft system eliminates the need for a separate overhead hood, helping create a clean and open kitchen layout. With 3-speed control and up to 330 CFM airflow, it efficiently removes steam, smoke, and odors, making it ideal for kitchen islands and open-concept spaces.
  • Flexible Cooking with Bridge Element: The bridge element connects two cooking zones into one large heating area with up to 4,200W of combined power, making it easy to use long pans, griddles, and oversized cookware. Four radiant burners offer flexible heat control for cooking different dishes at the same time.
  • Smooth Slide Touch Control: The responsive slide touch control makes it easy to adjust power and temperature settings with a simple swipe, giving you precise control for everyday cooking.
  • Easy Cleaning & Maintenance: The smooth ceramic glass surface offers a clean, modern appearance and wipes easily after cooking. The removable vent grille, filter, and drip pan make it simple to clean and maintain the downdraft ventilation system.
  • Designed with Safety in Mind: Cook with greater confidence using built-in safety features including child lock, overheat protection, hot surface warning, automatic shutoff, and 99 minute timer. These functions help reduce accidental operation and enhance cooking safety.

Separate pop-up downdraft

A separate unit sits in the counter near the cooktop and retracts beneath the counter when not operating. It can be useful when selecting a cooktop and ventilation component separately, but it occupies counter and cabinet space and has its own blower and ducting requirements. Confirm that the selected vent and cooktop are compatible before finalizing the counter layout.

Manufacturer-listed choices include JennAir’s 30- and 36-inch NextGen models, Elica’s 36-inch NikolaTesla Invert, and Fisher & Paykel’s 36-inch four-zone Series 9. These examples differ in size and stated features; use the exact model documentation to compare them against your cooking needs and installation constraints.

Upgrade your kitchen with a cooktop 36 inch that’s as versatile as it is beautiful – built to fit standard 36” cutouts with zero ductwork headaches.

Gas

KitchenAid’s documented 30-inch option has four burners, while its 36-inch option adds a fifth. Because gas installations also depend on the specified gas connection and model configuration, verify the manual and any required conversion or seal components rather than assuming another model’s parts will fit.

Electric

JennAir’s catalog includes electric downdraft models in addition to its induction and gas listings. The cited catalog information does not establish a specific electric model’s controls, burner configuration, or dimensions, so check those details on the individual product page and installation guide.

Cooksir 36 Inch Electric Cooktop with Downdraft, Recirculating Air Vent
  • 2-in-1 Space-Saving Design: Cooktop & Downdraft in One: Cooksir 36 inch electric cooktop redefines kitchen efficiency by combining two essential appliances into a single, sleek unit—no more needing a separate overhead range hood. By integrating powerful downdraft ventilation directly into the cooktop, it eliminates the need to install a bulky hood above your cooking area, freeing up valuable vertical space for cabinets, open shelving, or simply a cleaner, more open kitchen layout.
  • 7400W High Power + Versatile Burner Setup for All Cooking Needs: With a total power output of 7400W, this electric cooktop delivers the strength to handle even the most demanding cooking tasks—from rapid boiling water for pasta to high-heat searing for steaks. What sets it apart is its versatile burner configuration: it includes one large bridge BBQ griddle, perfect for cooking multiple items at once (like pancakes, bacon, or grilled veggies) without overcrowding, and one dual-ring burner that lets you adjust the heating area to match your cookware size.
  • Comprehensive Safety & Convenience Features for Peace of Mind: The built-in timer lets you set precise cooking durations, alerting you when your dish is ready. The child lock function prevents accidental adjustments or activation, keeping little hands safe around the kitchen. The pause function lets you temporarily stop heating (e.g., if you need to step away) and resume exactly where you left off, avoiding overcooking. Plus, the residual heat protection feature automatically detects when the cooktop is still hot after use, displaying "H" until it cools down—preventing accidental burns.
  • Powerful Downdraft Ventilation with 9 Speed Settings: Keep Air Fresh: Boasting 360CFM of suction power—strong enough to capture smoke from high-heat stir-fries or greasy frying—it pulls fumes downward (instead of upward) and out of your kitchen, ensuring your space stays fresh and clean. The 1-9 speed settings let you customize the ventilation to match your cooking. Unlike traditional overhead hoods that can miss fumes near the edges, this downdraft system sits close to the cooking surface, ensuring maximum efficiency with minimal noise.
  • Universal Cookware Compatibility: Use What You Love: No need to replace your favorite pots and pans—this 4 burner electric cooktop downdraft works seamlessly with all cookware materials, making it a versatile addition to any kitchen. Whether you prefer stainless steel, cast iron, ceramic, glass, copper, or aluminum cookware, the cooktop's heating elements distribute heat evenly across the base of your pots and pans, ensuring consistent cooking results every time.

Do not treat nominal width as a cutout measurement

A 30- or 36-inch product label identifies a product width category, not the opening or cabinet dimensions required. Before choosing, compare the exact cutout, countertop thickness, cabinet depth, clearances, and utility needs in the current installation documentation. A separate pop-up vent may change the required counter layout even when the cooktop width is unchanged.

Ducted exhaust, recirculation, and accessories

Ducted exhaust carries air out through ductwork; recirculation sends air through specified filters and returns it to the room. They are different installation configurations, and recirculation is not available for every model or fuel setup. Confirm the permitted configuration in the exact cooktop and ventilation manuals.

  • ❗❗❗Ductless Design & Flexible Installation Dimensions: Features a ductless downdraft system with no exhaust pipe, avoiding the hassle of duct arrangement. • Ductless Downdraft Design for Hassle-Free Installation: No exhaust pipe required! This cooktop features an indoor recirculation system that filters cooking fumes and releases clean air back into the room. • 2-in-1 Integration Saves Space: Combines a powerful downdraft range hood with an electric ceramic cooktop in one unit. No need to install an additional range hood, greatly reducing the occupied kitchen space. The integrated design also ensures a sleek and consistent kitchen aesthetic, perfectly matching modern embedded decoration styles.
  • High Power for Efficient Cooking & Strong Suction: Electric cooktop total power 7400W, including 1 dual-ring burner (1100/2300W) for flexible heat adjustment and 1 bridge BBQ burner (3900W) for large-area cooking. Downdraft hood with 135W total power provides strong suction to quickly capture fumes, ensuring a smoke-free cooking environment.
  • Universal Pan Compatibility & Versatile Use: Compatible with all types of flat-bottomed pans, regardless of material (such as stainless steel, aluminum, ceramic, glass, etc.). No need to replace existing cookware, offering great convenience for daily cooking. The diverse burner configurations meet different cooking needs, from simmering to high-heat frying and BBQ.

Build the equipment list around the chosen model and route. Depending on the system, additional components may include a blower, duct transition, recirculation kit, filter, or gas seal kit. For example, KitchenAid identifies its duct-free conversion kit as sold separately. Thermador’s specifications identify a required blower sold separately, separately sold recirculation and filter items, and a required 36-inch gas seal trim kit for the documented installation. Treat those as model-specific requirements, not universal downdraft accessories, and verify against current instructions.

What airflow ratings do—and do not—tell you

CFM describes airflow volume, not how effectively a system will capture fumes in every kitchen. Elica specifies 600 CFM for the NikolaTesla Invert, while Whirlpool’s chart lists a 600 CFM motor class for its separate downdraft models. Those figures are not a direct comparison of installed capture performance: Whirlpool explicitly notes that performance varies by installation. Duct route, blower placement, and the installed configuration matter, so do not choose on CFM alone.
