The right cordless nibbler depends first on the metal you need to cut and its thickness—not on a single “best” speed or gauge claim. For a US shortlist, the Makita XNJ01Z and Milwaukee M12 2476-20 are specified for 16-gauge mild steel; Bosch describes its GNA18V-16E for 16-gauge sheet metal; and Milwaukee’s M18 3476-20 is specified for 10-gauge mild steel. Those figures are manufacturer specifications, not results from a head-to-head test. Check the stated material, strength rating, region, battery platform, and package before choosing.

Which cordless nibbler fits your job?
For 16-gauge sheet, roofing, and ductwork
For US buyers working mainly with 16-gauge mild steel, the Makita XNJ01Z and Milwaukee M12 2476-20 both publish that capacity. Bosch describes the GNA18V-16E for 16-gauge sheet metal and specifically names roofing and ventilation ducts. The listed claims are not identical: Makita and Milwaukee give separate stainless and aluminum ratings, while Bosch’s cited description focuses on sheet metal and applications. Confirm the exact metal and thickness you plan to cut against the tool’s current manual and specification page.
For heavier mild steel
Milwaukee specifies the US M18 3476-20 for 10-gauge mild steel and 12-gauge stainless steel. That makes it the shortlist’s clearest published choice when the job calls for thicker mild steel. Its capacity claim should not be generalized to other metals: the stainless rating is different, and the page does not make this a universal thickness rating.

For material specified by strength and thickness
The European Milwaukee M18 FNB35-502X and Hong Kong Makita DJN161 pages state capacities in millimetres alongside material-strength values. This detail is useful when the material specification is known: for example, Milwaukee Europe lists 3.5 mm steel at 400 N/mm², but 2 mm at 800 N/mm². Do not transfer those figures to a differently rated alloy or assume the European kit is sold with the same contents elsewhere.
For corrugated or curved cuts
A nibbler uses a punch and die to remove small pieces of material rather than cutting with a continuous blade. Milwaukee’s M12 announcement says this mechanism supports curved, straight, and 90-degree cuts and navigation of corrugated metal; that is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent performance finding. For deeper corrugations, Milwaukee lists an M12 die-holder extension separately. Makita describes the DJN161 for wave-shaped sheet, while published radius figures help indicate the room a tool needs to turn: DJN161 is listed at 45 mm inner and 50 mm outer radius; the M18 3476-20 is listed at 2 inches.

Compare capacity, platform, geometry, and package
- Start with the actual material. Match mild steel, stainless steel, or aluminum to that model’s own rating. Steel strength values matter where the manufacturer supplies them.
- Check the battery platform. This shortlist spans Makita and Bosch 18V, Milwaukee M12, and Milwaukee M18. Existing compatible batteries can make a tool-only option more practical; do not assume batteries cross between platforms.
- Consider cut access and curve radius. A smaller stated radius indicates a tighter specified turn, but it does not establish how easy or clean a cut will be in your particular sheet. Also consider access to corrugation valleys and whether an extension is available for the exact model.
- Read the package contents for the local SKU. Tool-only listings exclude batteries and chargers, while the cited European Milwaukee kit lists both. Regional model names and packages differ, so confirm the seller’s exact SKU and included accessories.
- Check replacement-part availability. Punches and dies are model-specific wear parts. Confirm compatible replacements and their availability before purchase, especially if the tool will see regular production use.
What the specifications do—and do not—tell you
Manufacturer pages provide a useful shortlist, but they do not establish a comparative winner for comfort, durability, cut quality, runtime, or value. Published speed is not the same as cutting speed under a particular load. Milwaukee Europe’s 2025 release claims “up to 30 metres per charge” for the M18 FNB35-502X; it is a manufacturer claim, not a cross-model runtime test. Likewise, the M12 2476-20 figure of up to 7 feet per minute is specified with an XC 4.0 battery and should not be read as a guaranteed rate for every material or cut.
For operating guidance, chip handling, and protective equipment, use the current manual for the exact tool and applicable workplace rules. A chip bag or other included feature does not remove cutting hazards.
