The right storage depends on where it will live and how often you need what’s inside. Open bins and crates make frequently used belongings easy to reach; lidded totes help cover items stored indoors for longer periods; and outdoor gear may call for a purpose-built deck box. No single container suits every room, object or climate, so compare access, dimensions, protection and upkeep before choosing.
Choose an indoor container by access and protection
The Home Depot’s July 10, 2025 guide distinguishes open-top bins, crates and tubs from closed-top boxes and totes. Open containers make contents visible and are usually better for belongings you reach regularly. Lidded containers cover stored items and are more convenient when keeping things put away matters more than immediate access.
For belongings you use often
Use an open bin, crate or tub for items you want to see and retrieve without removing a lid. This format works well for frequently handled household belongings, but it leaves contents more exposed to dust and accidental spills. Choose a container that fits the storage space and is easy to reach when full.
For items kept covered
A tote or box with an attached or snap-on lid helps protect contents from dust, according to Home Depot. A lid alone, however, does not establish that a container is waterproof. Home Depot describes waterproof totes as typically using denser plastic, waterproof seams, tightly locking lids and a gasket around the opening; that more protective construction generally costs more upfront than ordinary storage. Check the specific product’s sealing details if moisture protection matters.

For bins that need to move
On hard floors, rolling bins can make it easier to move stored belongings, Home Depot advises. Handles can also help with lifting, while clear sides or a visible label can reduce the need to open containers to identify contents. Consider whether the bin will be stacked and whether its lid or handles still work in that arrangement.
Choose outdoor storage for the contents and exposure
A deck box is a weather-resistant outdoor storage container, according to Lowe’s. Common uses include patio cushions, gardening supplies, pool toys and outdoor games. Weather-resistant does not mean watertight: check the product’s stated protection and follow its care guidance rather than assuming a lid will keep out all moisture.

Measure the space and the objects
Before buying, measure the intended footprint and leave clearance for the lid to open. Compare the box’s internal dimensions with the actual objects, especially bulky cushions; a stated gallon capacity does not guarantee that a particular item will fit. Lowe’s also recommends considering both current and future storage needs.

Compare material and maintenance
Lowe’s offers broad material guidance; exact durability and care vary by model and exposure.

Check seating, locks and placement details
Some deck boxes can double as seating, but appearance is not proof that a box is safe to sit on. Check the manufacturer’s weight capacity for the exact model before using it as a bench. If security matters, confirm whether the box is lockable and what locking provision it has. Also check the current product specifications for dimensions, load ratings and care instructions, which can differ between models.

For bulky equipment or a larger volume of outdoor belongings, a cabinet or shed may be more appropriate than a deck box.
