Best Basement Door Locks: Security, Fit, and Safe Egress

A single-cylinder deadbolt can be a useful starting point for a basement entry door. Check egress requirements, door fit, and frame condition before choosing hardware.

A single-cylinder deadbolt is a practical starting point for a basement entry door: it locks with a key from outside and opens with an inside thumbturn. Before choosing one, check whether the door is an exit route, measure the door and lock preparation, and inspect the frame. A lock cannot make a weak or damaged door secure, and a lock must not prevent safe exit.

Why a single-cylinder deadbolt is a sensible starting point

A single-cylinder deadbolt uses a key on the exterior and a thumbturn on the interior. That arrangement offers keyed access from outside while allowing someone inside to operate the lock without a key. Schlage describes its B60 deadbolt in this configuration for entry doors: Schlage B60.

This is a category recommendation, not a claim that one model is the strongest or best-performing option. The available product information does not establish independent comparative test results across competing brands or models.

Keep the door easy to open from inside

If the basement door serves as an egress door, its lock must not create a barrier to escape. The 2021 International Residential Code, Section R311.2, states: “Egress doors shall be readily openable from inside the dwelling without the use of a key or special knowledge or effort.” Check the code adopted by your local jurisdiction and any local amendments; the model code alone does not determine the requirements for a particular property. 2021 International Residential Code, Chapter 3.

Schlage’s technical manual warns against double-cylinder locks—those requiring a key on both sides—on doors used for egress: “Caution: Double cylinder locks on any door, in any structure which is used for egress are a life safety hazard in times of emergency and their use is not recommended.” This is manufacturer guidance, and it reinforces the need to preserve key-free exit operation. Schlage Door Hardware Technical Manual.

A basement’s layout and the door’s function affect which code provisions apply. The 2021 IRC also addresses emergency escape and rescue openings in basements. Verify whether this particular door is a required exit with your local building department or a qualified construction professional before changing its locking hardware.

Check the door and frame before buying

Measure the existing door and lock preparation, then compare them with the product’s published specifications. For the Schlage B60, Schlage lists a 2-3/8-inch or 2-3/4-inch backset and a compatible door thickness of 1-3/8 to 1-7/8 inches. These are model-specific fit dimensions, not universal standards for every deadbolt. Schlage B60 specifications.

  • Door thickness: Measure the slab and confirm it falls within the model’s stated range.
  • Backset: Measure from the door edge to the center of the lock opening; confirm the lock supports that measurement.
  • Bore preparation: Check the existing holes and edge bore against the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Do not assume every door is drilled the same way.
  • Door hand and operation: Confirm the hardware is compatible with how the door swings and operates, and that the inside thumbturn remains accessible.
  • Frame condition: Look for a loose, split, damaged, or poorly fitted jamb around the strike. A deadbolt does not compensate for a weak frame or a door that does not close properly.

Pay attention to the strike and jamb

The strike transfers force from the deadbolt into the door frame, so installation and surrounding structure matter alongside the lock itself. Schlage’s B60 specifications describe an integrated strike reinforcer and 3-inch screws. Those are specifications for that model; confirm the supplied hardware and installation instructions for the exact product you buy. Schlage B60 specifications.

  • Size and fit: Each nominal 3-inch slide latch has a 2.85 x 1.39 in body and a 0.56 in wide keeper; check mounting space, door gap, alignment and bolt clearance
  • Stainless steel body: A brushed finish gives this compact door lock latch a clean look on doors and cabinets; align the bolt and keeper for smooth sliding
  • Four-way mounting: Install each slide bolt latch horizontally or vertically, facing left, right, up or down; downward mounting requires a compatible receiving hole

Check that the strike is installed as directed and that the jamb and surrounding structure are sound. If the frame is damaged, loose, or inadequate, address that condition rather than relying on a new lock to make up the difference.

Choose based on the door’s role, not just the lock type

A basement door may be an exterior entrance, an interior door, or part of a required exit path. The right hardware depends on that use, local code, the door’s construction, and the condition of the frame. Use this decision sequence before purchasing:
