A fun backyard birthday for young children can be simple: set out a few activities, keep the schedule flexible, and match the plan to the children’s ages and abilities. These six ideas adapt activities recommended by HealthyChildren.org into an easy-to-manage outdoor party menu.
Six backyard birthday activities to try
Choose a few activities that suit your yard and guests; you do not need to run all six. Set up stations with clear space between them, and have an adult nearby to help children use materials safely.
1. Sidewalk-chalk art
Use a safe, dry paved area as an open-ended drawing space. Offer chalk and let children create their own pictures. Keep chalk out of mouths and away from areas where children might trip or collide.
2. Collaborative mural
Put a large sheet of paper on an easel or another stable surface and invite everyone to add to a shared picture. Children can also make individual artworks. Washable supplies and protective smocks can help contain the mess; choose age-appropriate materials and supervise their use.

3. Mini obstacle course
Make a short route from simple activities such as a cardboard-box tunnel and hopscotch. Leave room between stations, inspect the ground and materials first, and skip anything unstable, sharp, or otherwise hazardous.
4. Beanbag toss
Set out a simple target and let children take turns tossing beanbags. Keep the play low-key and use an open area clear of people and obstacles. For younger children, supervise closely and keep beanbags away from anyone likely to put small items in their mouth.

Plan the party around the children
HealthyChildren.org’s guidance is aimed at young children, so adapt the guest list, activity choices, and schedule to the ages and abilities invited. For toddlers, it offers a guest-count rule of thumb: the birthday child’s age plus one. It suggests a gathering under 90 minutes for toddlers and about 2–3 hours for school-aged children. These are planning suggestions, not fixed rules.
For activities, HealthyChildren.org suggests planning around 10–15 minutes per game or station, while letting children continue when they are still enjoying it. Treat that as a flexible rhythm rather than a timer: some children will want to stay with one activity, while others will be ready to move on sooner.

Make the yard safer before guests arrive
Walk the yard before the party and remove obvious trip, sharp, or choking hazards. Keep children away from streets, grills, fire pits, lawn chemicals, and treated garden areas. The AAP’s backyard safety guidance recommends close adult supervision outdoors, secure playground equipment, and avoiding home trampolines.
If the yard has a pool, hot tub, pond, or other water, keep young children within constant touch supervision. The AAP also recommends layers of protection around pools, including a four-sided fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate.

Skip balloons around young children unless you can manage the risk: HealthyChildren.org identifies balloons as a choking hazard for children up to 8 years old. Keep other small accessories out of reach of guests who may mouth them, too.
Check heat, air, and food safety
On a hot day, make drinking water easy to reach and schedule breaks. HealthyChildren.org says a heat index at or above 90°F can be dangerous for young children. Check conditions on the day, shorten vigorous outdoor play or move the party indoors if needed, and consider local air quality and pollen when guests have asthma or allergies. For outdoor food, follow HealthyChildren.org’s “clean, separate, grill (or cook) and chill” approach. Keep cold foods below 40°F and hot foods at or above 140°F until serving. Food should not remain between 40°F and 140°F for more than two hours—or more than one hour when the outdoor temperature is above 90°F. Chill or discard it promptly. Keep raw foods separate from ready-to-eat foods, use clean utensils, and check cooking temperatures with a food thermometer. Details are in the AAP’s food safety guidance.
