What is BS 6891? It is the British Standard for low-pressure gas installation pipework on premises. BSI lists BS 6891:2015+A1:2019 as the current edition. Its scope includes certain LPG pipework, but it is not a universal LPG installation guide: the standard applies to defined gases, premises and pipe sizes, with several system types excluded.
What BS 6891 covers
The standard addresses design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of on-premises installation pipework carrying 2nd- and 3rd-family gases, up to 35 mm nominal size (R 1¼). BSI’s summary also identifies materials, components, jointing, flexible hoses, tubing and assemblies as subjects covered. BSI’s publication index and product page provide the catalogue-level scope.
These descriptions identify the standard’s subject matter; they are not a substitute for its full technical requirements. For pipe sizing, jointing methods, clearances, testing or acceptance criteria, consult an authorized copy of the current edition and applicable regulations rather than relying on catalogue summaries.
Does BS 6891 cover LPG pipework?
Yes, within its scope. LPG is a 3rd-family gas, so qualifying low-pressure installation pipework on premises is included when it meets the standard’s diameter and system boundaries. IGEM’s summary gives nominal operating pressures of 28 mbar for butane and 37 mbar for propane, and identifies the maximum nominal diameter as R 1¼ steel or DN 35. These are scope descriptors, not instructions for choosing equipment or setting an installation. IGEM’s gas-safety standards summary describes the related boundaries.

Where BS 6891’s scope stops
The publication index excludes service pipework and distribution systems, pipework contained within an appliance, bulk storage vessels, and LPG pipework in leisure accommodation vehicles covered by BS EN 1949. The installation setting and the part of the gas system involved therefore matter as much as the fuel.

These references address different contexts and are not interchangeable recommendations for every LPG system. Verify the current document and applicable jurisdiction for a specific project.

Which edition should you identify or buy?
Use the full designation BS 6891:2015+A1:2019. BSI dates the amendment 31 July 2019 and says it supersedes BS 6891:2015; BSI’s status index records the unamended 2015 edition as current only until 8 July 2019. Older editions are withdrawn. Check BSI’s live status before relying on this edition, because standards can be revised.
BSI lists both a digital PDF download and a hard-copy edition. The publication index gives ISBN 9780539002386. A PDF is not the only available format. The existence of an ISBN does not establish that a third-party retailer currently lists or stocks the standard.

Who should use the standard?
BSI identifies audiences including the petrochemical industry, manufacturers of gas-distribution equipment and components, gas suppliers and distributors, and builders, contractors, architects and facility managers. It is a professional technical reference, not a general DIY repair guide. A catalogue description cannot establish that a particular installation complies with the standard or with applicable regulations.

- Confirm the full current edition designation with BSI.
- Identify the gas family, premises and pipe diameter to see whether the scope applies.
- Determine whether the pipework is installation pipework or an excluded segment such as a service line, distribution system, appliance interior or bulk-storage arrangement.
- For vehicles, boats, temporary catering or larger domestic installations, check the separate document relevant to that setting.
- Use the authorized standard and competent professional advice for technical requirements and project-specific compliance.
