BIG says its 11,000-square-foot rooftop solar array produces about 342 megawatt-hours of energy per year; that is the architect’s stated estimate, not a verified report of the building’s current output.
What is the Robert Day Sciences Center?
The 135,000-square-foot center brings together computer science, data science, and life sciences at Claremont McKenna College. BIG says the project was commissioned in 2020 and is the first completed building in its Roberts Campus masterplan. The available sources describe it as completed but do not establish a precise opening date. BIG’s project page provides the architect’s project description; New Atlas’s October 3, 2025 feature also covers the completed building.
How do the stacked forms shape the building?
Each floor is rotated 45 degrees relative to the level below, creating a sequence of distinct program areas rather than one uniform vertical block. BIG says the arrangement opens views and circulation among laboratories, classrooms, and the wider campus.
New Atlas describes an atrium staircase that doubles as seating, as well as Douglas-fir interior elements and research areas focused on topics including genes, the brain, and climate. Together, these features make the building both a science facility and a place for campus movement and gathering.

What is the facade made of?
The exterior uses board-formed glass-fiber-reinforced-concrete panels. BIG says the panels’ textured finish evokes wood grain while offering the durability and fire resistance required for a modern laboratory. The solar installation is on the roof; the concrete facade itself does not generate power.
How much solar energy does BIG say it produces?
BIG reports that the roof has 11,000 square feet of solar panels and that they provide “about 342 megawatt hours of energy production per year.” This is the architect’s stated annual figure. The cited sources do not independently verify actual operating output, establish how much of the building’s energy demand the array supplies, or show that the center is net zero.

The distinction matters: an annual production estimate is not the same as a current meter reading or a whole-building energy balance. The available project information supports describing the array’s scale and BIG’s estimate, but not a claim about measured generation in a particular year.
