Bar1 in Hillarys was due to reopen on 25 February 2023 after renovations that included new flooring, a bar, seating, bathroom fixtures and nightclub holograms. That reopening is now a historical event: PerthNow reported in April 2026 that the venue had announced it would close for the last time on 2 May 2026. The available sources do not confirm what happened after that announcement or whether a venue now listed as Portal Nightclub is connected to Bar1.
When did Bar1 Hillarys reopen after renovations?
In a report published on 21 February 2023, PerthNow said Bar1 planned to reopen on Saturday, 25 February, after closing earlier that month for renovations. The venue had previously been known as Bar120. The report covered a planned reopening; it is not evidence of the venue’s current operating status.

What renovations did Bar1 Hillarys do?
The 2023 report described a broad interior refresh: new flooring, a new bar and seating, bathroom fixtures, and what it called “nightclub-specific holograms” around the venue. The work was presented as an effort to change the club’s image, which had included a reputation for sticky floors.
Owner Malcolm Pages told PerthNow that the floors had been stripped back to concrete before new flooring was installed. He described the renovation as overdue, saying, “It was well and truly overdue for a facelift.” That was his view of the project, not an independent assessment.

He said the upgrades were influenced by technology and venues he had seen in Europe. His claim that some installations were not available in any other Australian nightclub he knew of reflected his own knowledge, not a verified industry-wide comparison.

The same article quoted a farewell post from the venue: “May 2 — we say goodbye.” It also relayed the venue’s claim that nearly one million people had come through its doors in the five years before the announcement. That attendance figure was supplied by the venue and was not presented as an independently verified count. Pages also described Bar1 as Perth’s busiest nightclub every weekend from 2020 to 2025; that, too, was his claim rather than an independently established ranking.

Is Portal Nightclub the successor to Bar1?
A venue page branded Portal Nightclub displays event and ticket sections and gives an address of Shop 17/58 Southside Drive, Hillarys. The page’s title refers to Bar1 Night Club, but it does not establish whether Portal has the same operator, whether Bar1 reopened under a different name, or whether any current event is connected to Bar1. Government information about Hillarys Boat Harbour is separate from the private nightclub renovation. The Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure says the State Government invested $14.1 million in harbour activation and access improvements; that figure is for harbour-wide work, not Bar1’s renovation budget. The department’s page, updated 19 August 2026, says a timed parking trial concluded on 31 July 2026 and that timed arrangements remained in place while permanent changes were considered. Check the official page for current parking conditions before visiting.
