Investigators attributed the 12 September 2025 fire at a single-storey home on Horticulture Gardens in Banksia Grove, Western Australia, to a lithium-ion battery in the garage, PerthNow reported. The battery was not charging and was at the end of its operational life. Three residents evacuated without injury; the home was severely damaged and two vehicles were destroyed.
What caused the Banksia Grove house fire?
PerthNow reported that the investigation identified a lithium-ion battery in the garage as the cause of the fire. The battery was not charging and was at the end of its operational life. The report does not identify its host device, brand, model, or how it failed.
That account does not establish that charging caused the blaze, nor does it implicate a particular product or manufacturer.
What happened at the Horticulture Gardens home?
The fire began at about 2:54 a.m. on Friday, 12 September 2025, after an emergency call to triple zero, according to PerthNow. Firefighters contained it within an hour. Three people evacuated and were not injured.

PerthNow described the single-storey home as completely gutted. The roof collapsed, windows shattered, rubbish bins outside melted, and two vehicles parked at the front of the home were destroyed.
What did DFES advise about unwanted or damaged batteries?
A DFES spokesperson quoted by PerthNow said: “Unwanted or damaged lithium-ion batteries should be disposed via the Household Hazardous Waste Program facilities across the State.” The report does not provide facility locations or acceptance procedures, so check current program information before taking a battery to a facility.

What is known about the fire investigation?
DFES says its Fire Investigation Officers support fire officers in establishing the origin and cause of fires attended by the department. The agency describes this work as informing prevention and safety education, checking compliance with safety and construction standards, and identifying faulty products or work practices. This general description does not add details about the battery or its failure in the Banksia Grove incident.
