To apply iron-on edge banding, prepare a smooth panel edge, center the banding, activate its adhesive with a household iron, press it firmly into place, then trim and sand the overhang. Follow the instructions for your specific banding: iron settings and adhesive behavior are not universal.
What you need
- Iron-on edge banding suited to your panel and intended finish.
- A household iron. A dedicated or small travel iron can offer more control, but it is not required.
- A sharp utility or razor knife, sharp chisel, or purpose-made flush trimmer.
- A sanding block and 120-grit abrasive for cleanup.

How to apply iron-on edge banding

Prepare the panel edge
Remove deep saw marks and fill voids so the banding can contact an even, sound edge. An irregular edge can leave areas without good contact. WiseWood Veneer’s application instructions

Cut and center the banding
Cut the strip slightly longer than the panel edge. Position it so it overhangs both faces evenly. If your roll has splice joints, plan where they will fall so a joint is not placed in a conspicuous spot.

Heat and anchor a short section
WiseWood Veneer recommends a medium iron setting for the hot-melt adhesive described in its instructions. Start with a 4–6 inch section, then let it cool for about one minute to anchor the banding. These are that manufacturer’s directions, not a universal temperature or timing rule for every product. WiseWood Veneer’s application instructions

Continue along the edge with pressure
Move the iron steadily along the strip while pressing downward. Check that the entire banding surface is bonded. If a section is loose or curls, reheat it and immediately press it with a wood block, veneer scraper, or other flat-edge tool.

Trim the overhang
Use a sharp utility or razor knife, sharp chisel, or commercial flush trimmer. For cuts across the grain at the ends, make two or three light scoring cuts rather than one heavy cut. Along a long edge, use short strokes and hold the knife at a slight angle. Follow the grain where possible to reduce tear-out. WiseWood Veneer’s application instructions

Sand and allow the adhesive to settle

How to avoid visible glue or glue lines
Start with a smooth, even panel edge and apply steady pressure so the banding makes contact across its full surface. If an area lifts or curls, reheat it and press it flat immediately with a block or scraper. The available manufacturer instructions do not establish a separate method for removing visible glue lines, so avoid scraping aggressively or applying solvents without checking the banding maker’s directions; either could damage the surface.

A sharp knife or chisel can handle trimming with basic shop tools. A purpose-made flush trimmer is a task-specific alternative, not a requirement. Choose a method you can control without cutting into the panel face, and test the setup on scrap before working on a finished piece. Follow the instructions supplied with the particular banding for both heating and trimming; the available sources do not support a universal iron setting across products or a comparative performance ranking across substrates.
