Alkimos College’s Stage 2 expansion officially opened in November 2024, following construction completion in October. The $29.29 million figure in the original January 2022 report was a planning-stage estimate; later Western Australian Government reporting put Stage 2 at $52.2 million.
Why the reported cost changed
PerthNow’s January 2022 report put the proposed second stage at $29.29 million. That figure described the proposal at the time, not the eventual delivered project cost. In November 2022, the WA Government announced that construction had begun on a $52 million development. The 2024–25 WA Budget and the Government’s opening announcement later described Stage 2 as a $52.2 million project. The Government said the total Alkimos College project, including Stage 2, was approximately $100 million.
These are figures from different reporting dates and descriptions, so they should not be treated as interchangeable estimates of the same project milestone. PerthNow’s January 2022 report; the November 2022 construction announcement; the 2024–25 WA Budget Statements; and the November 2024 opening announcement report the respective amounts.
What the Stage 2 expansion includes
The January 2022 proposal described three two-storey buildings: an arts block and two learning blocks. It also outlined changes to existing spaces, including conversion of drama rooms to a teaching cafe and food technology facility, visual arts studios to a STEM lab and building and construction workshop, and the media room to a mechatronics lab. The proposal included 135 additional car parking bays and 50 bike racks.

Later WA Government descriptions presented the developed scope in broader terms: student services, a performing arts centre, dance and visual arts studios, dedicated music and specialist classrooms, STEM classrooms and additional general learning classrooms. The 2024–25 Budget described two-storey arts, English and mathematics learning areas, student services and an auditorium, as well as minor refurbishments to Stage 1 facilities. The Government also reported that the English block has a classroom and homeroom for the college’s Specialised Autism Learning Program.
Construction and opening timeline
- January 2022: PerthNow reported the proposed Stage 2 scope and forecast that facilities would be ready for the start of the 2024 school year.
- November 2022: The WA Government announced that Stage 2 construction had begun, with readiness for 2024 anticipated.
- October 2024: Construction was completed by EMCO Building, according to the WA Government.
- November 2024: Stage 2 officially opened. The Government credited T&Z Architects with the design.
What the early capacity forecast means
The January 2022 report said the proposal was expected to accommodate a further 750 students. That was a planning-era forecast; the later opening announcement and budget description cited here do not confirm that figure as the final added capacity. It is therefore best understood as what was anticipated when the proposal was reported, not a verified statement of the finished expansion’s enrolment capacity.

What is known about a possible third stage
The 2022 PerthNow report said another classroom block was expected in a third stage. The later project announcements and budget description cited here do not establish whether Stage 3 was approved or announced, so its status should not be inferred from that early expectation.
