For a cool home, choose houseplants for the room’s actual winter light and sustained temperature—not for a promise of frost tolerance. Snake plant, pothos, heart-leaf philodendron, Chinese evergreen, and ZZ plant are options for lower-light interiors, but the extension sources cited here do not establish that they tolerate unusually cold rooms. Most common houseplants should be kept above 55°F and away from freezing exposure, cold glass, and drafts.
What “cold tolerant” means for houseplants
For indoor plants, “cool-room tolerant” is a more useful description than “cold hardy.” Familiar houseplants are not generally suited to frost or freezing temperatures. Iowa State University Extension gives 65–75°F as an ideal range for most indoor plants and advises avoiding temperatures below 55°F. Even brief exposure to freezing temperatures may damage a plant; severe exposure can kill it. These are broad recommendations, not guarantees for every species or cultivar. Iowa State Extension’s houseplant care guidance does not make a plant safe for an unheated or freezing room.
Guidance ranges vary by plant type and source. University of Maryland Extension says foliage plants generally grow best at 70–80°F by day and 60–68°F at night; many flowering indoor plants prefer 55–60°F nights. Iowa State notes that many plants prefer a day-to-night drop of 10–15°F. Use these as general reference points, not as a single universal thermostat setting. Species, cultivar, exposure, and how long a plant experiences a temperature all matter. Maryland Extension’s temperature guidance also warns that excessive heat can halt growth, damage foliage, cause leaf drop, or lead to plant failure.
Houseplants to consider for lower winter light
The plants below appear in extension guidance for low or indirect light, or for ease of care. Those recommendations address light and routine care—not proven minimum temperatures—so they are candidates for a dimmer indoor spot only if its temperature is suitable.

| Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) | UVM Extension lists it among easy-to-grow plants that tolerate low-light conditions common in winter. | Not stated in the cited source. |
| Heart-leaf philodendron (Philodendron hederaceum) | UVM Extension lists it among easy-to-grow choices for low-light winter conditions. Nebraska Extension also includes it in a low, indirect-light list. | Not stated in the cited sources. |
| Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema commutatum) | UVM Extension lists it among easy-to-grow low-light choices; Nebraska Extension includes it among plants for low, indirect light. | Not stated in the cited sources. |
| ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) | Maryland Extension calls it easy to care for and advises watering only after the soil has dried out. | Not stated in the cited source. |
| Cast-iron plant (Aspidistra elatior) | Nebraska Extension lists it as a plant for low, indirect light. | Not stated in the cited source. |
See the Maryland Extension guide to selecting indoor plants, UVM Extension’s winter indoor gardening advice, and Nebraska Extension’s houseplant guide for the cited light and care information. Nebraska’s low-light list also includes parlor palm and corn plant; it is not a cold-tolerance ranking. Flowering houseplants generally need bright light, according to Maryland Extension, so a dim room is usually a poor choice if flowering is the goal.
Assess the room before choosing a plant
Before bringing a plant into a cool room, check the place where its leaves and pot will sit. A comfortable thermostat reading elsewhere in the home may not describe a cold windowsill, drafty doorway, or spot beside a heat register.

- Lowest sustained temperature: Check the intended location during the coldest part of the day and night. If it approaches or falls below 55°F, Iowa State’s general advice is to avoid keeping most houseplants there; do not treat a brief warm reading as proof that the spot is consistently safe.
- Winter light: Note how much natural light the plant will receive as days shorten. A plant listed for low light may manage a dimmer spot, but low-light suitability does not mean no light is needed.
- Drafts and temperature swings: Look for exposure from exterior doors, cold window glass, air-conditioning sources, or heating registers. Rapid changes and direct blasts can stress plants.
- Watering and humidity: Match the plant’s needs to the care you can provide, and use a pot with drainage holes. Nebraska Extension says most houseplants prefer 40–60% humidity and that many can be injured below 20%, with succulents an exception; humidity needs vary.
Winter care that reduces cold-season stress
Choose a stable placement
Keep foliage away from cold glass, exterior-door drafts, air-conditioning sources, and heating registers. Avoid trapping a plant between a curtain and a windowpane, where the temperature may swing. Nebraska Extension also advises keeping plants off cold window ledges in winter. If the best-light location is too cold, move the plant to a more stable spot rather than assuming it will adapt to chilled glass.
Protect plants on the trip home
When buying a plant in cold weather, shop near the end of the trip, wrap it, and take it promptly to a heated vehicle. Iowa State warns that even brief freezing exposure may cause damage.

Adjust watering to winter conditions
Shorter days often mean less light and slower growth, so check the soil rather than following a summer watering calendar. UVM Extension cautions against soggy soil because it can cause root rot. This is especially relevant for plants such as snake plant and ZZ plant, whose cited care guidance emphasizes allowing the soil to dry before watering. Do not compensate for cool conditions by keeping the pot continually wet.
Add light only if the location needs it
If a room lacks a suitable bright window, supplemental light may help, depending on the plant and location. UVM Extension says supplemental lighting is required for indoor fruiting vegetables; that does not establish one universal grow-light model, wattage, or schedule for houseplants. Choose lighting based on the species’ needs rather than assuming every low-light plant requires the same setup.

Consider humidity without overcorrecting
Humidity recommendations are broad, and a humidifier is not automatically necessary in every home. Iowa State notes that misting does not meaningfully raise humidity for more than a few minutes. Use the plant’s needs and the room’s conditions to decide whether humidity management is warranted.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a room is unusually cold
If the room is unheated, regularly drops below 55°F, or risks freezing, the cited extension guidance does not establish that any of the plants listed above will tolerate it. Keep them in a warmer, stable location or check reliable, species-specific care information for the particular plant and cultivar before placing it there. A low-light label is not evidence of cold tolerance.
