Use a tiller to break hard or compacted soil or prepare a new garden plot. Use a cultivator to work shallowly in soil that is already loose, mix light amendments, or manage small weeds between established rows. The right choice depends on the soil, the size of the area, and whether plants are already growing there.

What is the difference between a tiller and a cultivator?

A tiller uses rotating tines to loosen and turn soil. A cultivator is designed for lighter work in loose soil, such as mixing compost or fertilizer and breaking up small weeds. As Troy-Bilt puts it, “A cultivator is primarily used to mix loose soil, while a garden tiller can break up hard pieces of ground.” Troy-Bilt’s tiller and cultivator guidance describes cultivators as tools for close work in smaller spaces.

Consideration Tiller Cultivator
Best soil condition Hard, compacted, or otherwise difficult ground Soil that is already reasonably loose
Typical job Opening or loosening ground for a new plot Mixing light amendments, breaking small weeds, or working between rows
Working style More digging power; can disturb a larger volume of soil Lighter and easier to maneuver for shallow, close work
Best fit New beds and larger or tougher areas Established beds, narrow strips, and small spaces

Which tool do you need for your soil and garden?

Choose a tiller for hard ground or a new plot

If you are converting an area into a garden, loosening compacted soil, or working ground a cultivator cannot readily penetrate, choose a tiller. A light cultivator is not a substitute for a tiller on hard sod, rocky ground, or an untouched plot; its tines are intended for a lighter workload. The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension’s Selecting a Tiller for the Home Garden, published February 28, 2024, is an additional guide to choosing a home-garden tiller.

Choose a cultivator for loose soil and established beds

When the bed is already workable, a cultivator can mix in light fertilizer, manure, compost, or potting soil and disrupt small weeds or grasses. It is suited to close work around established plantings when you can keep the tines shallow and away from roots.

Match machine size to the area

Virginia Cooperative Extension’s Choosing and Using a Tiller says mini-tillers and cultivators suit small gardens under 1,000 square feet and are designed for 6-inch-wide strips. It describes front-tine tillers as a good choice for gardens under 5,000 square feet with loose soil; rear-tine tillers suit larger operations and hard soil. These are selection guidelines, not a guarantee that a particular machine will suit every soil or layout.

How to use a tiller

  1. Prepare the area. Clear the intended work area and check for rocks, buried utilities, fences, and nearby structures. Rotating tines can cause injury or property damage around hazards; consult Virginia Cooperative Extension’s safety guidance and the machine manual.
  2. Choose a suitable machine. Front-tine tillers are easier to maneuver in smaller areas. Rear-tine machines are heavier and better suited to hard soil and larger operations.
  3. Begin with a controlled pass. Let the machine work without forcing it too deep or moving too quickly. Virginia Cooperative Extension warns, “Do not overload the tiller by tilling too deeply or at a high speed.”
  4. Stop before checking a problem. If a gasoline tiller vibrates unusually or makes abnormal noise, stop the engine and disconnect the spark-plug wire before inspecting or repairing it, following the manual for that model.

How to use a cultivator around existing plants

  1. Start with loose soil. Use a cultivator for light mixing and small weeds, not to break hard ground or open a new plot.
  2. Work narrow strips. Move between rows or through open areas of an established bed, keeping the tines clear of stems and roots. Virginia Cooperative Extension identifies 6-inch-wide strips as a use for mini-tillers and cultivators.
  3. Keep cultivation shallow near roots. A Greenworks operator manual surfaced in Virginia Cooperative Extension’s guidance states that shallow cultivation below 2 inches can disrupt weeds and aerate soil without injuring nearby roots. That advice is model-specific; check your machine’s manual and use care around plant roots.
  4. Follow the machine’s settings. As examples of model-specific limits, Troy-Bilt lists the TB225 with adjustable 6-to-9-inch width and cultivation up to 5 inches deep, and the TBC304 with adjustable 6-to-12-inch width and cultivation up to 6 inches deep. These product specifications are not universal depth recommendations, especially around established plants.

Safety checks before and during operation

  • Disengage the tines before starting the machine, and learn the stop controls before you begin.
  • Never leave a running machine unattended.
  • Do not adjust the machine while its engine is running unless its manual explicitly permits it.
  • Stop the engine before investigating unusual vibration or noise. For a gasoline model, disconnect the spark-plug wire before inspection or repair as directed by the safety guidance and manual.
  • Keep the work area clear of rocks and check for buried utilities and nearby structures before tilling.
