Havelar’s first reported 3D-printed home, built near Porto, Portugal, had its basic structure printed in 18 hours. The 80-square-metre (about 860-square-foot), two-bedroom house was not completed in that time: crews added the roof, windows, door, paneling and other finishes afterward. The full project reportedly took less than two months.
What was printed in 18 hours?
Havelar used a COBOD BOD2 construction printer to extrude a cement-like mixture in layers, forming the home’s basic structure and its characteristic ribbed walls. The 18-hour figure refers to that printing stage—not the complete construction of a finished, move-in-ready house.
The unnamed single-storey home is in the Greater Porto area of Portugal. It measures 80 square metres (about 860 square feet) and has two bedrooms, a central kitchen and dining area, a living room and a bathroom. New Atlas reported the project on April 25, 2024; Built Offsite also reported the home and printer details. New Atlas’s report and Built Offsite’s report describe the project.
Was the whole house built in 18 hours?
No. Printing produced the basic structure. Human builders then installed the roof, windows, door, paneling and other finishing elements. New Atlas reported that the entire project took less than two months, so the printing time and total project duration describe different scopes.

What does the reported cost say about affordability?
New Atlas attributed a figure of €1,500 per square metre to printer manufacturer COBOD and compared it with a reported Porto average of €3,104 per square metre, also attributed to COBOD. The article does not define which costs are included or show that the two figures use the same accounting basis. They should be read as a reported comparison, not as a verified like-for-like construction-cost analysis.
Havelar co-founder Rodrigo Vilas-Boas was quoted as saying that €150,000 (approximately US$161,000 in the 2024 report) could make a home possible for a young couple. That is a quoted affordability claim, not evidence of a completed sale or an itemized budget. The report does not establish the home’s sale price.

The project was presented as a starter home for young people. The report also contrasted it with more expensive 3D-printed homes aimed at a different market segment, but did not provide a directly comparable cost analysis.
What happens after the first printed home?
In 2024, Havelar said it hoped to scale production and reach carbon neutrality by 2030, potentially using alternative materials such as earth and straw. Those were future ambitions reported at the time, not demonstrated results. The coverage does not establish the home’s current sale, occupancy, permitting or availability status.

What the 18-hour claim leaves out
The project illustrates why construction-printing claims need a clear scope. A printer can form a building’s structure quickly, but the cited 18 hours does not measure the time or cost of completing every part of a home. Likewise, the quoted per-square-metre figures do not disclose their cost categories, and the coverage provides no independently validated performance or lifecycle-carbon results.
