On a three-phase property, either inverter type may be possible; the right design depends on system capacity, local grid rules and which circuits need backup during an outage.
What a single-phase inverter does
A solar inverter converts the direct current (DC) electricity produced by panels into alternating current (AC) for household use or export to the grid. A single-phase inverter connects to one power line conductor, as SMA describes. The phase configuration should match the property’s electrical supply and the system’s design.
Advantages of a single-phase inverter
It matches a single-phase home supply
For a property with a single-phase supply, Australian Government guidance says a single-phase inverter is required. In this case, compatibility is the decisive reason to choose one, rather than an optional performance upgrade. The government’s guidance is specific to Australia; confirm the applicable requirements with the local network operator and installer elsewhere.
It can suit a smaller solar system at lower relative cost
Single-phase inverters are generally suited to smaller PV systems. SMA characterizes them as comparatively inexpensive, while Australian Government guidance notes that three-phase inverters cost more and offer higher capacity. These are relative descriptions, not a guaranteed saving or a quote: installed cost depends on the model, system size, location and installation.

It may work on a three-phase property
A three-phase supply does not automatically require a three-phase inverter. Australian Government guidance says a property with three-phase supply may use either inverter type, subject to the system design and applicable limits. In that guidance’s context, a single-phase solar system connected to a three-phase network can still reduce electricity costs through self-consumption across all three phases. That does not mean the single-phase inverter itself outputs power on all three phases.

Why local export rules matter
Network operators may set solar connection or export limits per phase. Where they do, a three-phase system may have higher limits than a single-phase one. There is no universal export maximum to apply to every home: the relevant limit depends on the country, distribution network and current connection rules. Check the rules for the property before choosing an inverter or finalizing system capacity.

SMA also discusses a 4.6 kVA threshold in connection with German rules passed in 2012. That is a historical, Germany-specific reference, not a current universal residential limit; it should not be used to size a system in another location.

Inverter phase and backup design are related but distinct decisions. A single-phase battery or hybrid inverter can supply only the backup circuits connected to its phase. If you want essential loads on more than one phase to remain powered during an outage, ask the installer to identify which circuits will be backed up and whether the proposed design supports them.

What to confirm before choosing
- Whether the property has a single-phase or three-phase supply.
- The proposed PV system and inverter capacity.
- The local network’s connection and export limits, including any limits set per phase.
- Which circuits need outage backup and whether they are on the phase the backup system will supply.
- Whether the selected inverter and system design meet local requirements and have the necessary network approval.
Australian Government consumer guidance recommends discussing system options with a solar retailer or installer. In Australia, consult the government’s solar PV system design guidance; for other regions, confirm requirements with the local utility or regulator and a qualified installer.
