An adjustable picture frame jig holds the frame’s corners in position while you bring the joints together during glue-up. A documented DIY version uses a slotted base, sliding corner clamps and a band clamp; ready-made frame clamps are another option. Router guides and individual 90-degree corner clamps serve different jobs, so choose a tool based on the operation you need to support.
What an adjustable picture frame jig does
Picture-frame glue-up can be awkward because several corners need to stay aligned while pressure is applied around the frame. A jig gives the corners a place to register and helps keep the assembly in position as the glue sets. It does not replace careful, consistent cuts or prove that a frame is square; check the assembled frame before the glue cures.
The options below are not all interchangeable. Some hold a whole frame during glue-up, one is an individual corner-assembly clamp, and another is a router guide for frame work.
Build the WOOD Magazine sliding-corner jig
WOOD Magazine’s design, updated March 4, 2025, uses a flat base, three underside braces, adjustable corner clamps and a 1-inch-wide band clamp. The example base is 27 × 32 inches; WOOD says it can be enlarged for larger frames. That base measurement is a design example, not a stated maximum frame capacity. Make the base and slotted corner clamps
- Build the flat base and attach three braces across its underside to help keep it flat under clamping pressure.
- Glue and clamp the corner-clamp parts together. The overhanging hardboard captures the banding.
- Mark diagonal lines on the base to locate the slot centerlines. Drill a 5/16-inch hole at the end of each slot, connect the outer edges of the holes, and cut the slots to shape with a jigsaw.
- Sand the parts and apply a clear finish.
- Attach each corner clamp through a slot with bolts, washers and a wing nut. Leave enough slack for the clamp to slide along the slot.
Set up the glue-up
- Place one sliding corner clamp at each frame corner.
- Lay waxed paper beneath the frame corners so squeeze-out does not glue the work to the jig base.
- Wrap a 1-inch-wide band clamp around the corner clamps and tighten it.
- Check the joints and frame alignment while you can still adjust the assembly, then leave the glue to cure according to its label.
The source describes the design and setup but does not report controlled performance testing. It does not establish a measured improvement in accuracy, speed or failure rate.
Another DIY design: dowels, bars and wedges

- Position the frame between the fixed and loose bars.
- Put dowels in suitable base holes to locate the frame and loose bar.
- Drive wedges between the dowels and loose bar to apply pressure to the assembly.
- Woodsmith recommends a quick coat of paste wax on the base and bars to reduce the chance that glue squeeze-out will stick to the fixture.
This approach adjusts by choosing dowel positions and setting wedges, rather than sliding corner clamps in slots and tightening a band around them.

Choose based on frame size and the job
- Build a jig if you want a shop-made fixture and are comfortable cutting a base, slots or dowel locations, and clamp components. The slotted design moves corner clamps; the dowel-and-wedge design changes its setup by repositioning dowels.
- Buy a frame clamp if you prefer a ready-made glue-up tool. Compare a product’s stated frame range with your actual frame dimensions; the D4644 listing gives one, while the cited Infinity listing does not.
- Use a router guide only when the task is router or frame-jointing work. VARIJIG is not a substitute for a glue-up fixture.
- Use an individual corner clamp for a 90-degree corner or T-joint when appropriate, but do not assume one clamp holds all four frame corners.
