Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a colorful garden that suits your yard, choose flowers after checking sunlight, soil, drainage and local climate. Use annuals such as zinnias for flexible seasonal color, combine perennials with different bloom times for a returning framework, and arrange plants in grouped, layered drifts rather than rows. No single flower is best for every site.
Start with the garden you have
Before choosing flowers, observe how much sun the planting area receives over several days and assess the soil’s texture, moisture and drainage. Most ornamental plants need well-drained soil; a soil test can help guide any amendments. Check plant labels and local extension advice for mature size, hardiness, sun and water needs. These starting principles come from University of Maryland Extension’s guide to planning and maintaining a perennial garden.
- Full-sun area: Consider sun-loving annuals such as zinnias, while confirming that the chosen variety fits your conditions.
- Containers: Look for compact or dwarf varieties and check the label for mature size and watering needs.
- Pollinator goal: Plan for flowers across the growing season, and include host plants and habitat—not just bright blooms.
Planting dates depend on location. Maryland Extension advises waiting until after the local last-frost date to plant tender annuals outdoors; use your own area’s frost guidance rather than applying a Maryland date elsewhere.
Choose flowers for color, timing and use
These examples are drawn from U.S. extension guidance, not a nationwide ranking. Suitability, bloom timing and performance vary by region and cultivar.

Combine bloom times for a longer display
Many perennials have a limited flowering window. Select varieties with different bloom times, then use annuals to add color between perennial flushes and help carry the display from late spring into early autumn. Perennials can change the garden’s color and form through the seasons, but they are not all-season bloomers. University of Maryland Extension explains these trade-offs in its perennial selection and care guide.

Arrange flowers so the color reads as a garden
Colorful flowers make a stronger composition when planted in groups and at varied heights, rather than scattered as isolated specimens or set in rigid rows. Maryland Extension recommends irregular masses, varied bloom periods and grouped plantings. A practical layout can use a taller layer at the back or center, medium-height flowers around it and lower plants at the edge, adjusted for the site’s viewing angles and mature plant sizes.
- Group small plants in uneven numbers or use a single large specimen as a focal point.
- Vary height, growth habit, flower and leaf color, and bloom season.
- Leave enough space between plants for air circulation; temporary annuals can fill gaps while perennials grow.
- Check mature spread before planting so groupings do not become overcrowded.
These design principles are covered in Maryland Extension’s garden-planning guide and its pollinator garden guidance.

Plan for pollinators beyond flower color
Bright petals alone do not make a complete pollinator garden. Provide flowers through the growing season, host plants for the insects’ life cycles, and habitat. Maryland Extension also recommends a nearby water source and advises against pesticide use in the yard or garden. The right mix depends on which pollinators you hope to support and which plants suit your region.
Flower shape can matter as well as color: University of Illinois Extension notes that butterflies are typically more drawn to a flower’s shape than its color. Its article, “Help the butterfly lifecycle: Plant a garden of pollinator favorites,” also emphasizes choosing plants that support the butterfly lifecycle.

Make the final selection site by site
Compare candidate flowers by the factors that affect how they will perform and what you want from the garden:
- Annual or perennial, and whether you want to replant each year.
- Sunlight, soil, drainage and water needs.
- Expected bloom period and how it fits with other flowers.
- Mature height and spread, especially for containers or small beds.
- Local hardiness and native status.
- Maintenance such as deadheading, and whether the priority is cut flowers, pollinators or a longer color season.
Use local extension guidance and plant labels to resolve details not established by a general flower list. A site-matched mix of annuals and perennials will usually serve a colorful garden better than choosing flowers by color alone.
