GoldRush is a late-season option with several culinary uses; Yellow Transparent and Lodi are early-season apples described in Indiana guidance, but both have notable fire-blight concerns. Before planting, check chill requirements, pollination partners, mature size, and soil drainage with your local extension service.
What “yellow apple” means for your planting decision
Yellow apple describes the fruit’s appearance, not one cultivar with a shared growing profile. Harvest timing, culinary use, disease susceptibility, and climate fit vary. The cultivar notes below come from regional extension guidance, so treat them as starting points rather than universal recommendations.
Compare three yellow-fruited cultivars
| Cultivar | Fruit and season | Uses and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| GoldRush | Golden-yellow fruit; North Carolina State Extension lists mid-to-late October ripening for its profile. Timing varies by region. | Suitable for fresh eating, pies and crisps, and cider. It is not self-fertile and needs another compatible apple cultivar nearby. The profile lists USDA zones 5–8, full sun, and well-drained soil. NC State Extension |
| Yellow Transparent | One of Indiana’s earliest cultivars; Purdue says the fruit turns yellowish white when mature. | Used particularly for applesauce. Purdue describes it as very susceptible to fire blight and recommends limited planting. These assessments are Indiana-specific. Purdue Extension |
| Lodi | Pale yellow at maturity; Purdue says it is ordinarily harvested green. | Used for applesauce. Purdue notes susceptibility to common diseases, especially fire blight. These assessments are Indiana-specific. Purdue Extension |
Check climate and chill fit before choosing
Apple trees need suitable winter chilling to develop normally. UC IPM warns that inadequate chilling can delay foliation and lead to uneven fruit development. Do not assume the GoldRush zone range or a chill figure from a regional table applies everywhere: Oklahoma State’s cultivar table, for example, lists GoldRush at 800 chilling hours, a figure tied to that regional guidance rather than a universal guarantee. Compare local climate information with advice from your state or county extension service. UC IPM: Cultural tips for growing apple · Oklahoma State Extension: Growing apples in the home garden
Plan for pollination, not just one tree
Most apple cultivars are self-unfruitful, so reliable fruit production generally calls for pollen from a different compatible cultivar. Iowa State Extension advises planting two or more cultivars for best production and checking that their bloom periods overlap. GoldRush is specifically described by NC State as not self-fertile.

- Years of Fresh Homegrown Fruit: Grow your own assortment of crisp apples, sweet blueberries, juicy raspberries, and flavorful blackberries. Enjoy beautiful spring blossoms followed by productive harvests.
- Ideal for Home Landscapes: Perfect for orchards, homesteads, gardens, food forests, and hobby farms. Plant multiple varieties to create an attractive and productive landscape.
- Plant with Confidence: Includes hardy bare root trees that are easy to plant and establish with proper care. Plant in full sun with well-drained soil and water regularly during establishment.
Do not choose a second tree at random. Ask a local extension service or consult a regional pollination chart to confirm both cultivar compatibility and bloom overlap for your area. Nearby apple trees may be relevant, but verify that they bloom at the right time and can provide compatible pollen. Fit the tree to the landscape
Allow for the right light and soil
For GoldRush, NC State specifies full sun and well-drained soil. Use those requirements when assessing a possible site, but confirm the needs of whichever cultivar you select. Poor drainage and inadequate sun can make a site unsuitable even when the cultivar is otherwise a climate match.

- 🍎 3 Live Apple Tree Saplings: Receive three healthy young apple tree saplings ready to plant and grow in your garden, backyard orchard, or container. Plants ship dormant (not leaves or fruit) in spring.
- 🌳 Grow Your Own Fresh Apples: Enjoy the satisfaction of harvesting fresh apples from your own trees. Perfect for home orchards, backyard gardening, and fruit lovers.
- ☀️ Hardy and Easy to Grow: Apple trees are resilient and adaptable, thriving in full sun with well-drained soil and producing fruit for years once established.
- 🏡 Great for Gardens & Small Orchards: Ideal for backyard orchards, homesteads, garden landscapes, and even large containers for patio growing.
- 🌱 SHIPPED DORMANT FOR HEALTHY TRANSPLANTING: Trees are shipped without leaves or fruit and may appear as a simple stem with roots, which is normal for dormant plants. This stage reduces transplant stress and helps roots establish more quickly in your soil, supporting stronger, more reliable growth after planting. Trees are healthy and will often start sprouting in 2-4 weeks.
Use rootstock to estimate mature size
Tree size depends partly on rootstock. NC State lists GoldRush at 12–16 feet tall on M-7 rootstock and 8–12 feet on M-26. These are profile-specific ranges, not guaranteed dimensions for every nursery tree or growing site. Confirm the rootstock before purchase and leave room for the tree’s expected canopy and access for care and harvest.
Choose a planting window for your region and stock
UC IPM describes dormant-season planting in winter or early spring as ideal for bare-root fruit and nut trees. Local weather, planting-stock type, and regional conditions affect timing, so check local guidance before scheduling planting. UC IPM: Cultural tips for growing apple

Choose according to the fruit you want
- For a late-season apple with broad kitchen uses: GoldRush is described for fresh eating, pies and crisps, and cider; its North Carolina profile gives mid-to-late October as the ripening period.
- For an early applesauce apple in Indiana: Purdue describes Yellow Transparent as very early and recommends limited planting because of its high fire-blight susceptibility.
- For another early applesauce option in Indiana: Purdue describes Lodi as pale yellow at maturity and commonly harvested green, while noting susceptibility to common diseases, especially fire blight.
Flavor, storage performance, and harvest timing can vary by region and site. Use local cultivar guidance to refine the choice rather than treating an Indiana or North Carolina description as a promise for your yard.

- Confirm the cultivar is suited to your region’s chill conditions and climate.
- Check the likely harvest season and whether the fruit suits your intended use.
- Ask whether the cultivar has significant local disease concerns.
- Verify the tree’s rootstock and expected mature size before choosing a location.
- Identify a compatible pollinizer with overlapping bloom, using local guidance.
- Confirm the site has appropriate sun and drainage, and check local planting timing.
For GoldRush specifically, NC State notes that thinning fruit improves fruit size and quality. Its profile also reports that ripening begins 2–3 years after planting; that is not a guaranteed time to a first crop. NC State Extension
