Hellebores are perennials that flower in winter or early spring; Bells of Ireland is an annual grown from seed, with tall stems of green calyces. The best choice depends on your light, soil, and local climate, so check plant labels and seed-packet directions before buying.
Green flowers for different garden settings
| Plant | Type and flower form | Flowering season | Light and site | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Helleborus foetidus | Perennial with clusters of lime-green, bell-shaped flowers | Late winter into spring | Deeper shade; moist, free-draining soil | A shaded or woodland-edge bed |
| Helleborus argutifolius | Perennial with green blooms and holly-like leaves | Winter into spring | Sun, sheltered from strong, cold winds | A sunny, protected spot |
| Helleborus viridis | Clump-forming perennial, about 40 cm tall, with dark lime-green flowers | Late winter and early spring | Partial shade; humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil | A compact green-flowered planting |
| Bells of Ireland (Moluccella laevis) | Annual grown from seed; upright spikes of green calyces surrounding small white flowers | Not stated in the Teagasc guide excerpt | Follow local seed-packet and supplier directions | A tall border accent or cut-flower garden |
Hellebores suit gardeners looking for a perennial that returns; Bells of Ireland offers a more vertical annual display. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) identifies H. foetidus and H. argutifolius as green-flowered hellebores (RHS growing guide). Teagasc’s 2026 flower-seed guide describes Bells of Ireland as tall spikes of green, bell-shaped calyces around small white fragrant flowers (Teagasc flower-seed guide).
Green-flowered hellebores: perennial blooms for winter and spring
Hellebores generally flower in winter or early spring. Many grow well in partial or dappled shade and prefer soil that stays moist but drains freely. Avoid ground that is persistently waterlogged or very dry. Their species-specific needs matter: these are not interchangeable plants.
Helleborus foetidus: lime-green bells for deeper shade
Stinking hellebore has upright stems bearing clusters of lime-green, bell-shaped flowers above finely divided leaves. The common name is not a claim that it constantly smells: the RHS says the plant smells only when its leaves are crushed. It prefers deeper shade, according to the RHS guide. Arkansas Extension describes chartreuse flowers over roughly six weeks in late winter, but that timing reflects its regional guidance rather than a guarantee for every climate (Arkansas Extension).

Helleborus argutifolius: a sun-loving, sheltered option

Helleborus viridis: a compact green hellebore
The RHS lists green hellebore as a clump-forming perennial around 40 cm tall, with dark lime-green flowers about 5 cm across in late winter and early spring. Its profile recommends partial shade and fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil (RHS plant profile).

Planting and care
- Plant hellebores from autumn through spring, following the RHS guidance and adjusting for local conditions.
- Set each plant at the same soil level as it was in its container. Leave room for its mature spread; H. foetidus and H. argutifolius need more space than smaller hellebore selections.
- Use organically rich, well-drained soil and light to moderate shade as general guidance, not a substitute for the needs of a named species. North Carolina State Extension notes that cold winter winds can damage foliage and that dividing is possible from late summer to early fall (NC State Extension hellebore profile).
- Do not assume seed-grown hybrids will flower immediately: NC State Extension notes that they may take two years to bloom.
Bells of Ireland: tall annual spikes from seed
Bells of Ireland (Moluccella laevis) is grown as an annual from seed. Its upright stems are covered in green, bell-shaped calyces, with small white flowers inside. The distinctive form suits a border or a cut-flower garden.
The Teagasc 2026 guide excerpt does not establish a universal sowing date, germination method, flowering window, or hardiness range. Follow the directions on the seed packet and ask a local supplier how to time sowing for your area. A 2025 OSC Seeds catalogue lists Bells of Ireland seed, but a catalogue listing does not confirm current availability (OSC Seeds catalogue).

Are hydrangeas reliably green-flowered?
Some hydrangea blooms can open or fade to green, but that color change is not the same as a dependable green-flowered variety. Color depends on the plant and the stage of the bloom; the available extension guidance does not establish a cultivar shortlist that reliably holds green flowers. If you want a consistent green display, choose a named green-flowered hellebore or Bells of Ireland and verify any hydrangea color claim against cultivar-specific guidance.
Handle hellebores with care
Hellebores are harmful if eaten. The RHS also warns that H. viridis can irritate skin and recommends gloves and protective equipment when handling it (RHS plant profile). Arkansas Extension warns that all parts of H. foetidus are poisonous. Keep plants away from children and pets who might chew them, and wear gloves when pruning or handling plant material.
