These six practical tips help livestock owners and land managers install and maintain a fence that suits its animals and site.
1. Choose an energizer for the actual fence
Compare energizers by output joules, not advertised miles alone. Virginia Cooperative Extension says mile ratings are subjective because conditions vary, while output joules are a more useful comparison. Its general sizing guideline is roughly one output joule per mile of fence, but soil, climate, vegetation, construction, and fence length can change what is needed. As Matt Booher, an Integrated Conservation Agronomist at Virginia Tech, puts it: “Every fencing situation is different so there is some level of guesswork involved in determining an appropriate sized energizer.”
Account for expected vegetation and other voltage losses, and consider capacity for planned expansion. Also check the power source: mains, battery, and solar options suit different sites and access conditions. For complex systems, follow the energizer manual and seek local fencing advice. Virginia Cooperative Extension’s energizer guide discusses selection and installation.
2. Design the grounding system for the site
Poor grounding is a leading cause of electric-fence problems. Virginia Cooperative Extension’s 2025 guidance recommends locating the fence grounding system at least 33 feet from utility grounds, the service-box ground, and metal water pipes. Choose soil likely to stay moist, since dry or poorly conductive soil can make grounding less effective.

For energizers up to 15 joules, the Extension’s general recommendation is at least three ground rods, each driven six feet into moist soil; higher-output energizers generally need more rods, and poorly conductive soil may need additional grounding. These are installation recommendations, not a universal code. Adapt the system to the energizer instructions and local requirements. Use compatible rods, clamps, and connectors: mixing copper and galvanized steel can cause corrosion and impair conductivity. See Virginia Cooperative Extension’s grounding guidance.
3. Keep vegetation and damage from loading the fence
Grass touching wire, fallen branches, heavy animal contact, and broken parts can drain voltage or interrupt the circuit. Walk the fence line regularly and remove vegetation and debris; inspect insulators, joints, and wire for damage, then repair faults promptly. A cutout switch can isolate a section while you troubleshoot, or disconnect a bottom wire that is heavily loaded by grass.

4. Use fence-rated cable and secure connections
Use insulated lead-out cable made for electric fencing, not residential electrical wire. The high voltage involved requires appropriately rated cable. Keep connections tight and use suitable connectors; loose or poor connections add resistance and reduce performance. Avoid running lead-out cable or fence wire parallel to telephone or power lines, especially directly overhead, because induced voltage or interference may occur. Virginia Cooperative Extension covers these points in its energizer installation guide and troubleshooting guide.
5. Measure voltage to find changes early
Use a fence voltmeter to establish the fence’s normal voltage and check it periodically. A changing reading can help identify a developing fault before the fence obviously stops working; the meter does not itself correct poor grounding, a short, or a bad connection.

Virginia Cooperative Extension’s 2025 troubleshooting discussion gives minimum ranges of 3,000–5,000 volts for cattle and 7,000 volts for sheep. Its energizer publication describes 5,000 volts for cattle and 7,000 volts for sheep as ideal minimums. These are that source’s livestock recommendations, not a single standard for every species or situation. Follow the energizer maker’s instructions and applicable local livestock guidance. Virginia Cooperative Extension’s troubleshooting guide explains voltage checks and common causes of low readings.
6. Match the wire arrangement to the animal and soil
A soil-only return path can be less reliable in dry ground. For horse fencing, University of Georgia Extension describes alternating charged and grounded strands so an animal touching adjacent strands can complete the circuit without depending solely on earth return. Its horse-fence guidance also recommends a hot top wire to discourage reaching over, and a grounded bottom wire to reduce vegetation-related shorts.

- MADE IN THE USA: Fence charger undergoes full-load testing in the USA after manufacturing, with it being designed to offer protection against lightning damage for reliable performance
That configuration is specific guidance for horses, not a universal layout. Choose wire placement and return path for the species, fence purpose, soil moisture, and vegetation load. Make the fence visible and follow the energizer manufacturer’s directions. University of Georgia Extension’s horse-fencing guidance provides the species-specific arrangement.

Modern low-impedance energizers deliver pulses. Do not connect multiple energizers to one fence or make a continuous loop: overlapping pulses can remove the safety characteristic of pulsed current. Keep installation and grounding consistent with the energizer manual and local rules; requirements can vary by jurisdiction.
