Try one small change—like a rug, a painted door, or a reading nook—or take on a larger update such as new tile. These 50 ideas are starting points to adapt, not rules that every home has to follow.
Start with the room you have
Before choosing a color or feature, consider how the room is used, what architectural details are already worth showing off, and how much space you can give the change. Designer Kailee Blalock of House of Hive Design Co. puts it this way: “Good taste comes from understanding proportion, editing confidently, and choosing pieces that feel true to the architecture and to the person living there.” The quote appears in Homes & Gardens’ 2026 article on design fundamentals.
- Match the effort to the goal. A textile, mirror, or hardware swap is easy to revise; paint changes a surface more decisively; tile, built-ins, and other construction work take more planning.
- Check scale and balance. Consider how a rug relates to the furniture, whether art has room to breathe, and how pattern sizes work together.
- Choose for the room’s use. Kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor areas benefit from materials and finishes suited to their conditions. A washable rug may be useful where spills are likely.
- Keep what makes the home distinct. Brick, stained glass, interesting trim, and other existing details can guide choices rather than compete with them.
Timeless decorating advice also favors preserving distinctive architectural features and using considered changes—such as lighting or rugs—to refresh a room. See Homes & Gardens’ guide to timeless decorating.

Use more than one chair style around the table, but create a connection through a shared color, material, or shape so the combination feels deliberate.
3. Build a reading nook
A lounge chair, side table, and lamp can turn an underused corner into a comfortable place to read. Check that the lamp reaches the seat and that there is room to move around it.
4. Turn a window into a cushioned bench
If a window area has enough depth, add a fitted cushion and a few pillows to create a perch. Measure carefully and avoid blocking windows or access to controls.
5. Create a dining nook
A built-in or compact nook can make an awkward corner useful for meals. Plan seating, table depth, and circulation together before committing to fixed furniture.

A single chair can make an unused corner feel finished. Add a small table or floor lamp only if the space can accommodate them without crowding the room.
7. Make the headboard a focal point
A statement headboard can add shape, texture, or color behind the bed. Its height and width should feel proportionate to the bed and wall.
8. Add a bar cabinet
A bar cabinet gives bottles and glassware a dedicated home while serving as furniture. In a small room, choose a footprint that leaves clear paths and enough space to open its doors.
Walls, ceilings, and surfaces: focus attention where it counts
9. Use bold wallpaper in a powder room
A small powder room can be a contained place to try a vivid pattern. Let the wallpaper lead, and keep other finishes from competing with it.
10. Paint one accent wall
A single colored wall can add depth without changing the whole room. Choose the wall with a natural focal point, such as a fireplace or bed, rather than selecting one at random.

11. Decorate behind the bed
Use art, paint, wallpaper, or a considered arrangement of objects to give the bed a backdrop. Keep the composition centered and sized to the bed rather than the full wall by default.
12. Hang art in a bathroom or kitchen
Art can make practical rooms feel more personal. Choose placement and materials with the room’s moisture, heat, and cleaning needs in mind.
13. Try an unexpected paint color
Color does not have to be bright to feel bold. A muted or unusual shade on a small surface can make a room distinctive without dominating it.

A contrasting tile wall can define the shower area. Because tile is a more involved finish, consider the pattern, grout, waterproofing, and surrounding surfaces as one design decision.
15. Make the backsplash a feature
A bold backsplash gives a kitchen a focal point and can establish its palette. Balance a strong pattern or color with quieter cabinetry and counters where needed.
16. Put a mirror above the mantel
A mirror can complete the wall above a mantel and reflect light from elsewhere in the room. Check its size against the mantel and secure it appropriately.
17. Treat the ceiling as a surface
Paint or finish the ceiling to draw the eye upward or create a more enclosed feeling. Test how the color looks in the room’s natural and artificial light.
18. Decorate the space between shelves
Use the wall area between shelving to introduce art, color, or texture. Leave enough negative space for the shelves and their contents to remain legible.
19. Include trim in the color plan
Painting trim to contrast with—or blend into—the walls can change a room’s character. Consider doors, window frames, and adjoining rooms so the color transition feels intentional.

23. Soften sleek furniture with throws
A throw adds texture to streamlined seating or a bed. Choose a fabric and color that complement the larger pieces rather than adding visual clutter.
24. Refresh doors with paint or hardware
A new door color or updated hardware can make a noticeable difference without replacing the door. Check hardware compatibility and the condition of the door before choosing a finish.
25. Hang a chandelier somewhere unexpected
A chandelier can bring a focal point to a room beyond the dining area. Make sure its scale suits the space and that its location works with the room’s clearances and electrical setup.
26. Use a full-length mirror
A full-length mirror is practical in a bedroom or entry and can visually open a room. Position it where it is useful and where its reflection adds something welcome.
27. Improve bedroom lighting
Consider whether bedside lighting is easy to reach and suited to reading, winding down, and moving around. A mix of light sources can make the room more flexible than relying on one overhead fixture.
28. Curate a gallery wall
Combine framed art, photographs, or other wall pieces in a layout that suits the wall and furniture below it. Plan spacing and overall dimensions before hanging to avoid a scattered result.

30. Upgrade cabinets
Refresh cabinets with paint or updated pulls when the existing units are sound. For a larger change, consider whether new doors or a broader renovation better suits the condition and layout.
31. Display attractive necessities
Keep frequently used kitchen items accessible and make their arrangement intentional. Group similar objects and leave some counter space clear so the display remains functional.
32. Refresh a bathroom mirror
A different mirror shape or frame can change the feel of a vanity wall. Check its width against the sink and lighting, and choose a placement that works for everyday use.
33. Stagger shelves
Varying shelf heights can make a wall arrangement more dynamic. Before installation, map the layout and check that the spacing suits both the objects and the wall’s proportions.
34. Make a neglected area useful
Look at the entry, a hallway, or an awkward recess and ask what it could support. A slim console and small mirror, for example, can furnish an entry without taking much floor space.
35. Turn a nonfunctional fireplace into a display
If a fireplace is no longer used, treat its opening as a place for a carefully composed display. Do not use it for storage or decorative items until you understand its condition and any safety constraints.
36. Highlight plants
Use plants to add living texture and draw attention to a windowsill, shelf, or empty corner. Choose locations that suit the plants’ light needs and do not obstruct paths.
37. Give old furniture a paint refresh
Paint can extend the life of a piece that is structurally sound but visually tired. Prepare the surface properly and test the color where it will be seen alongside the room’s other finishes.

38. Show off existing architectural details
Let features such as brick, stained glass, or distinctive trim inform the room’s palette and materials. This can make a home feel more individual than covering every surface with a new trend.
Pattern, color, and outdoor space: add personality with balance
39. Paint the kitchen island
A contrasting island color can give a kitchen a focal point without repainting every cabinet. Check how it works with counters, backsplash, and adjoining cabinetry.
40. Use a printed living-room rug
A patterned rug can introduce color and help define a seating area. Relate its scale to the furniture and use the rug’s colors to guide smaller accents.
41. Dress up a patio or balcony
Make an outdoor area feel like an extension of the home with suitable seating, textiles, or plants. Choose materials appropriate for the exposure and leave enough room to use the space comfortably.
42. Mix prints at different scales
Patterns can coexist when they vary in scale and share some visual connection, such as a color or mood. Keep one pattern dominant and use others in smaller doses.
43. Use bold tile or flooring
A strong tile or floor pattern can bring character to a room. Because it is a prominent and comparatively involved choice, consider how it will meet adjoining finishes and how easily the look can be changed later.
44. Line a windowsill with plants
A row of plants turns a windowsill into a simple display. Check that pots fit securely and that the plants suit the light and temperature at the window.
45. Reupholster stairs
A runner or upholstered stair treatment can introduce color and texture to a prominent transition in the home. Plan the material and installation for safe, practical use on steps.
Choose the right idea for your next update
Start with the change that solves a real need or improves a feature you already like. If you are unsure, try a reversible element first—such as a rug, throw, or movable chair—before committing to paint or construction. For lasting finishes, decide how the room is used, how the materials will be maintained, and how the new work will connect to the home’s existing architecture. The 50-idea MyDomaine roundup was updated June 14, 2022; its suggestions are best treated as adaptable inspiration, not a formula for every home.
