Move the printer off your main desk without making it awkward to use: a printer stand, side cabinet, bookcase shelf, lower shelf, or ventilated closet can all work if the surface is stable and the printer has room for its trays, covers, airflow, and service access. The right spot depends on your model’s size and how it feeds and outputs paper.
Five practical places to put a home-office printer
1. On a dedicated printer stand
A printer stand gives the machine a defined place and can free up the main desk. A wheeled cabinet can be moved when you need access, but check its weight rating, footprint, wheel locks, and stability before buying. Measure for trays, doors, and covers in their open positions, not just the printer’s closed dimensions.
Brother lists the CB2000 as a 15.7-inch printer cabinet with wheels. Its listing recommends at least one optional paper tray for easier accessibility with that cabinet; this is an example of a product-specific recommendation, not a compatibility guarantee for other printers. 2. On a side cabinet or credenza beside the desk
A nearby cabinet keeps the printer within reach while leaving the work surface clear. Choose a flat, sturdy top that can support the printer without wobbling. Before settling on the location, make sure paper can feed and output freely and that the printer will not strike a wall or adjacent furniture when its scanner lid, access doors, or trays open.

3. On a shelf in a bookcase or storage unit
A bookcase shelf can make use of vertical storage, but only if it securely supports the printer’s weight. Measure the full working envelope: include the scanner lid, paper trays, access doors, and the path paper takes in and out. A snug cubby may fit the printer when closed but prevent loading paper or clearing a jam. Leave the ventilation clearance specified in the exact model’s manual.
4. Under the desk or on a lower shelf
A lower shelf or accessible space under the desk can use otherwise idle floor-level area. Keep the printer reachable for loading paper and clearing jams, and leave its output path unobstructed. Avoid damp or dusty locations and spots exposed to direct airflow from a heater or air conditioner.

5. In a closet or alcove
A closet or alcove can reduce visual clutter if the printer remains easy to use and has adequate ventilation. Do not assume a closed cabinet or tight closet is suitable for every model: the printer’s manual should allow the location, and its covers and trays must open fully. If the space traps heat or makes routine access difficult, choose another spot.

Start with a stable surface
Lexmark’s C9235 location guidance says, “Provide a flat, sturdy, and stable surface,” and calls for room to open trays, covers, and doors. Read Lexmark’s C9235 location guidance. The principle is useful, but its clearances apply to that printer guidance; do not transfer its measurements to another model.

Use the manual for your exact printer
Clearance and ventilation requirements vary by model. Find your printer’s manual and check the required space around it, including room for extended trays, an open scanner lid, access doors, and service. HP’s M452 setup guide, for example, covers a different printer family and should not be used as a clearance specification for another model. See HP’s M452 setup and user guides.
Check the surroundings and outlet
In its C9235 guide, Lexmark advises keeping the printer away from water or wet locations, direct HVAC airflow, direct sunlight, and humidity extremes, and placing it near an appropriately rated, grounded, accessible outlet. Confirm the corresponding requirements in your own printer’s manual rather than treating one manufacturer’s instructions as universal.
