For most carved pumpkins, a battery-operated LED tea light or flameless electric candle is the best all-around choice: it gives a familiar candle-like glow without an open flame. Glow sticks are another official safety recommendation, while LED string lights and small pumpkin lights suit more decorative effects. These are use-case picks among light types—not a tested ranking of individual products.
Which light should you use in a jack-o’-lantern?
Choose a flameless light, especially if children, costumes, or other decorations may come near the pumpkin. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends battery-operated lights or glow sticks in jack-o’-lanterns that children can access. New Jersey’s Division of Fire Safety likewise names glow sticks and electric candles as the safest choices.
There is no single winner for every display. Consider the look you want, how much light you need, how easily the light fits through the pumpkin opening, and whether you want to reuse it. The official guidance cited here does not compare specific products for brightness, runtime, durability, or value.
Five jack-o’-lantern lighting picks by use case
1. Battery-operated LED tea light: best all-around candle-like glow
A battery-operated LED tea light is a practical starting point if you want a familiar warm point of light without a flame. Check the product’s dimensions against the pumpkin opening, how its flicker effect looks, what batteries it takes, and whether its switch is easy to reach after placement. Do not assume a particular brightness or runtime unless the maker specifies it.

2. Flameless electric candle: best for a taller candle appearance
A flameless electric candle can more closely resemble a small candle than a compact tea light. Confirm that it fits securely inside the pumpkin and can stand upright on its base. Battery type, flicker style, timer functions, and switching method vary by model, so check the product details rather than assuming features.
3. Glow stick: best for a simple, disposable option
Glow sticks are expressly recommended as a flameless jack-o’-lantern lighting option by both CPSC and New Jersey fire-safety guidance. They are simple to place, but are generally a single-use choice; decide whether that suits your display and check that the light is bright enough for the effect you want. The cited sources do not establish comparative brightness or duration.

4. Battery-operated LED string lights: best for a multi-point decorative effect
A short battery-powered strand can spread points of light through a pumpkin for a different look from a single candle-like source. CPSC’s advice for decorative strands is to use lights tested by a recognized testing laboratory, inspect them for damage, discard sets with damaged sockets, wires, or connections, and avoid overloading extension cords. That general advice does not establish that every strand is suitable inside a fresh, damp pumpkin; follow the product’s instructions and use only a strand rated for the intended conditions.
5. Small LED puck or pumpkin light: best when a compact shape is useful
A small puck-shaped or purpose-made pumpkin light may be convenient where a larger candle will not fit. This is a plausible product category, not a product type evaluated by the cited safety sources. Verify its dimensions, battery requirements, instructions for use, and any relevant testing or certification before buying.

What about a flashlight?
A flashlight is useful for carrying while trick-or-treating, rather than as the first choice for lighting a stationary pumpkin. CPSC recommends that children carry flashlights so they can see and be seen. Its advice does not identify a handheld flashlight as a jack-o’-lantern light.

If brightness matters, look for a maker’s stated output or compare products under the same conditions; the available official guidance does not provide a brightness ranking. For reusable lighting, check whether the light uses replaceable batteries or is rechargeable, and whether it can be switched on and off easily once placed.

If you choose a real candle
A real candle creates an open flame inside a carved decoration, so flameless lighting is the safer default. If you use one, CPSC advises keeping burning candles away from combustible decorations and anywhere they could be brushed against or knocked over, and never leaving them unattended. New Jersey fire-safety guidance also recommends avoiding real candles in jack-o’-lanterns.
The historical figures cited by New Jersey’s Division of Fire Safety show why decoration placement matters: NFPA data for 2014–2018, as reported by the division in 2021, averaged 770 home structure fires per year that began with decorations, with 2 civilian deaths, 30 civilian injuries, and $11 million in direct property damage annually. In that same reported data, 44 percent of decoration fires occurred because decorations were too close to a heat source. These are historical averages, not current annual estimates. Keep decorative lighting in good condition
- For decorative light strands, use products tested by a recognized testing laboratory and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Inspect strands before use. Discard sets with damaged sockets, wires, or connections.
- Do not overload extension cords.
- New Jersey’s 2015 guidance recommends low-heat, energy-saving LED lighting over incandescent decorative lights. See its Halloween safety guidelines.
CPSC’s 2012 release also reported more than 3,500 Halloween-related injuries between October and November in the prior year, and said pumpkin carving was associated with the most Halloween-related injuries in 2011. Those figures describe the periods cited in the release, not current injury totals. Its Halloween safety tips include guidance on pumpkin lighting and decorative strands.
