Grapes, kiwifruit and passionfruit are true climbing vines; blackberries and raspberries are cane fruits that some gardeners train on wires or trellises. The right choice depends on your climate, room for a sturdy support, pollination needs and willingness to prune. Check local growing guidance and cultivar requirements before planting: there is no single best option for every site.
How to choose a climbing fruit plant
- Climate: Match the species and cultivar to your local winter conditions and growing season. Passionfruit and kiwifruit have different climate limits, and cultivars can vary.
- Support and space: Grapes, kiwifruit and vigorous passionfruit need substantial support. Caneberries may need wires or trellising depending on their growth habit.
- Pollination: Check kiwifruit pollination requirements before buying; many plants have separate male and female vines, although some cultivars are self-fertile.
- Maintenance: Grapes need regular structural pruning. Passionfruit vines need size and tangle control, while caneberry pruning depends on type and fruiting habit.
1. Grapes
Grapevines are a natural fit for a trellis or other support system. Ask Extension gives a spacing range of 6 to 12 feet between plants in a row, but spacing depends on the variety and training system (Ask Extension, “Grape vine trellis”).
Grapes fruit on one-year-old canes. Pruning is therefore part of maintaining the vine and developing replacement fruiting canes, as well as controlling the number of buds left to produce growth. The work is substantial, and the right cuts depend on the training system; Illinois Extension’s grape-growing guidance should not be treated as a universal pattern for every vine.
2. Kiwifruit
Kiwifruit vines need a strong support structure. Oregon State University Extension notes that support can help reduce sunburn and wind damage, and that vines need adequate water (“Growing kiwifruit in your home garden”).

Confirm the cultivar’s pollination requirements and climate suitability with the nursery or local extension guidance before choosing plants; the Oregon State producer guide to kiwiberries and fuzzy kiwifruit covers pollination considerations.
3. Passionfruit
Passionfruit is a vigorous vine that needs strong support, much like grapes. UC Cooperative Extension Ventura County recommends pruning to keep vines a manageable size, remove tangles and take out dead wood (“Passion Fruit”).

Do not choose a passionfruit solely by the species name: species and local winter conditions affect whether it suits a particular garden. Check local guidance for the cultivar you are considering.
4. Blackberries
Blackberries are cane fruits, not twining vines. Trailing and semierect types can benefit from trellising, but support needs vary with growth habit. UC Statewide IPM recommends full sun and deep, well-drained soil for caneberries; moisture matters during fruit ripening and flower-bud formation (“Cultural Tips for Growing Blackberry and Raspberry”).

Identify the blackberry type before pruning. First-year pruning guidance differs by type, so a generic cut schedule can be the wrong fit for your plant.
5. Raspberries
Like blackberries, raspberries grow on canes rather than climbing by twining. They can be grown in rows with support, and site needs include full sun, deep, well-drained soil and reliable moisture during fruit development, according to UC Statewide IPM’s caneberry guidance.

Pruning depends on whether a raspberry cultivar fruits on first-year or second-year canes. Identify the cultivar and use cultivar-specific extension guidance for a pruning calendar rather than assuming all raspberries are managed alike.

A sturdy garden trellis or other support should suit the plant’s eventual growth and the conditions at the site. Consider the structure’s strength, height, width, materials and installation, and position it with the plant’s light, water and exposure needs in mind. The support needs of grapes, kiwifruit and passionfruit are not interchangeable with those of every blackberry or raspberry type.
