For moisture-tolerant gear, a simple covered area may be enough; for belongings that must stay dry, plan drainage first and consider an enclosed room. Before building, check the deck’s condition, ground drainage, clearance, access, and local requirements.
Start with the deck and site
Under-deck storage works only if the structure and ground can support the plan. Inspect the deck for rot, damaged fasteners, and problems with the framing or ledger. This Old House’s guide, updated March 31, 2026, quotes general contractor Tom Silva: “This also gives you a chance to inspect areas vulnerable to rot, such as the tops of the joists and the ledger. If you find a problem, you can repair or replace the joists as necessary and make sure the ledge flashing is intact.” Read the guide.
- Check for standing water and determine where runoff can drain without flowing toward the house.
- Measure the usable footprint, headroom, and access route. This Old House gives five feet of ground-to-joist clearance as a planning rule for most storage solutions, not a universal code requirement.
- Identify utilities or other obstacles that could limit the layout.
- Check municipal permit requirements and any HOA restrictions. If structural condition or capacity is uncertain, have the deck evaluated before adding an enclosure or other load.
Choose an approach based on the protection your belongings need, whether the deck is existing or being rebuilt, installation complexity, and how easily you need to reach stored items.
Five under-deck storage ideas
1. Keep it open and covered for moisture-tolerant gear
A level, well-drained area screened with lattice or fencing is a straightforward place for items that can tolerate some moisture exposure—or that are independently protected. It can suit tools and toys, but it is not dry storage by itself: rain can still reach the area, and ground moisture remains a concern. This Old House’s under-deck storage guide describes open storage as a basic option.

- Versatile Storage: Whether it's outdoor patio furniture cushions, pool accessories or beach towels, Devoko is the ideal storage option to make your outdoor life easier and more enjoyable
2. Prepare a drained floor and add weather-resistant bins
For a more orderly setup, prepare the ground with geotextile fabric and crushed stone, then use weather-resistant boxes or containers for smaller belongings. Keep containers accessible and grouped by use. This can improve organization and protect their contents, but bins do not divert water coming through deck boards or solve standing water beneath the deck. Follow the ground-preparation and drainage advice in This Old House’s guide.
3. Build a semi-dry enclosure
Combine a drainage system with weather-resistant siding or panels and a usable access door. This gives more side protection than an open area and may work for lawn equipment or bicycles, but it should not be treated as a watertight room. Plan access so you can retrieve equipment and inspect the enclosed area. This Old House presents drainage and weather-resistant enclosure materials as part of this type of storage.

4. Add under-deck drainage, then organize the space
Manage runoff before adding shelves, lighting, or containers. Under-joist panels or troughs attach beneath the joists to catch water and direct it to a gutter. An above-joist membrane sits on top of the framing and below the decking; it is generally a better fit when planned for a new deck or major rebuild than as a simple retrofit. These are different installation approaches, not interchangeable details.
Trex RainEscape is one named example of an under-deck drainage system, with troughs, downspouts, tape, caulk, flashing, and gutter components covered in its installation guidance. Compatibility and installation details depend on the deck; Trex notes that framing and spacing can require adjustments. Consult the current Trex RainEscape installation guide and the additional Decks.com drainage-system instructions before selecting or installing a system. Once water is directed to a suitable outlet, add storage features that fit the layout.

5. Enclose a waterproof storage room
A fully enclosed room offers the most protection among these options, but it is also the most involved design. It requires a waterproof membrane above the joists as well as an enclosure, carefully managed drainage, and suitable access. The deck’s condition, ground slope, outlet location, ventilation, and local rules all need to be addressed. This is a higher-complexity path; no general cost estimate can be applied without a site-specific design.
For an enclosed build, This Old House lists treated lumber, lattice or weather-resistant siding, galvanized fasteners, hinges and a latch, caulk, and paint. Its guide also recommends sealing and overlapping siding joints and preserving access for inspection. Consult the guide and confirm project requirements locally.

Compare the options
| Approach | Moisture protection | Best fit | Work involved |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open, covered storage | Low; not dry storage | Moisture-tolerant gear or independently protected items | Lowest of these options |
| Prepared floor and bins | Containers protect their contents, but do not manage water entering from above or standing water | Small, organized items on a drained surface | Ground preparation and containers |
| Semi-dry enclosure | More protection from the sides; not guaranteed watertight | Equipment such as lawn gear or bicycles | Drainage, siding or panels, and an access door |
| Drainage system plus organized storage | Manages runoff from the deck; does not by itself seal the room or stop all moisture | Existing decks or planned rebuilds, depending on system placement and compatibility | System-specific installation; above-joist membranes are best considered before decking |
| Fully enclosed waterproof room | Highest protection in this comparison, if designed and built appropriately | Items needing the most protection | Most involved; requires membrane, enclosure, drainage, and site-specific planning |
Keep water moving away from the house
Consider both water from above and moisture at ground level. Direct captured runoff through a gutter and outlet that can carry it away appropriately, and prepare the ground so water drains away from the home. A layer of geotextile fabric and crushed stone is one basic floor approach in This Old House’s guidance, but it does not replace a drainage plan for roof-like runoff.
Follow the selected system’s installation instructions for alignment, slope, and framing details. For example, Trex’s RainEscape guide includes gutter alignment and slope instructions and notes that framing and spacing may require changes. A drainage system controls water along its intended path; it does not guarantee a sealed room or eliminate every source of moisture.

Choose the right fit for your project
- Choose open storage when the items can tolerate exposure and simplicity matters more than dryness.
- Choose bins on a prepared floor when the main need is tidy storage for smaller belongings and the site drains well.
- Choose a semi-dry enclosure when you want side protection for equipment but do not require a fully waterproof room.
- Plan drainage with the deck work when replacing decking or building new, especially if considering a membrane above the joists.
- Consider a fully enclosed room only after drainage, structure, ventilation, access, and local requirements have been resolved.
For existing decks, the right drainage retrofit depends on joist spacing, framing condition, deck geometry, and the system’s installation requirements. If a deck rebuild is already planned, above-joist drainage can be coordinated before the decking goes down. In either case, keep the installation documentation for the system you select and verify current product guidance.
