Roses, tomatoes and azaleas are three plants that gardening experts suggest may benefit from used tea leaves or cooled tea. Treat this as modest garden advice, not a proven way to boost growth or yield: tea is not a complete fertilizer, and its effects depend on the plant and the soil already in your garden.
Which plants may benefit from tea leaves?
Roses
Richard Barker, commercial director of LBS Horticulture, says tea leaves contain tannins that may add slight acidity to alkaline soil, along with small amounts of nitrogen. That could make a modest application a reasonable option around roses if your soil is alkaline. His advice is not evidence from a controlled trial, and tea leaves should not be treated as a substitute for fertilizer or a soil test.
Tomatoes
Barker also suggests watering tomatoes with cooled tea. The proposed benefit is the small amount of nitrogen in tea, but the available expert guidance does not establish that tea increases tomato yields, prevents disease or improves growth. Use it only as an occasional, mild addition rather than as a main feed.
Azaleas
Azaleas prefer acidic conditions. Julian Palphramand, Head of Plants at British Garden Centres, identifies them as acid-loving plants and says tea leaves may help maintain lower soil pH. That is a gardening suggestion, not proof that used tea reliably changes the pH of garden soil. If the soil is already suitable, adding tea may not be necessary.

How to use tea around plants
- Use plain tea only. Choose used leaves or tea water without milk, sugar or other additions.
- Let it cool completely. Apply cooled tea water as you would regular watering; never pour hot tea on plants.
- Keep the amount modest. Avoid repeatedly adding large quantities of leaves or tea water, especially if you do not know the soil pH.
- Consider composting. Mix used leaves with other organic material in your compost instead of placing them directly on the soil. No special tea-leaf recipe or guaranteed nutrient dose is established.
- Check the tea bag. Some tea bags contain plastic and will not break down in compost. If you are unsure what the bag is made of, empty the leaves out and discard the bag separately.
Check soil pH before trying to change it
Plant preference matters, but so does the soil you already have. The Edmonton Horticultural Society cautions that large quantities of tea may alter soil pH over time and recommends testing pH and monitoring plant health. A soil test can help you avoid adding an amendment that moves conditions away from what your plant needs.
Tea leaves should not be relied on as a complete fertilizer, pest-control treatment or dependable soil acidifier. The gardening sources behind these suggestions do not establish those effects, nor do they provide verified growth or yield figures for roses, tomatoes or azaleas.
