To make a quilted hexagon placemat, appliqué fabric hexagons to a fabric top, layer it with batting and backing, stitch around the shapes through all three layers, then square and bind the piece. A documented AccuQuilt example finishes at 18 by 12 inches; use its quantities as a starting point, then choose a restrained palette and arrangement for an everyday modern look.
Choose a construction method
The most direct scrap-friendly route is to appliqué separate hexagons onto a plain top. The 2015 AccuQuilt tutorial describes both folded, basted shapes with turned edges and fused raw-edge shapes. Its author, Erin Hentzel, calls the project “a great way to use scraps and a great quilt pattern for beginners!” That is her assessment of the project, not a guarantee of difficulty for every maker.
| Method | What it involves | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Folded, basted appliqué | Fold fabric around templates, baste and press the edges, remove the templates, then stitch the shapes down. | Choose this if you want turned edges and are comfortable with preparation and hand basting. |
| Fused raw-edge appliqué | Apply fusible web to fabric, cut the hexagons, fuse them to the top, then sew around each shape. | The AccuQuilt author presents this as the faster option. It needs fusible web and an iron, and leaves raw fabric edges beneath the stitching. |
| Stack-n-whack repeated print | The American Quilter’s Society method aligns a large-scale print repeat, cuts triangles using a ruler’s 60-degree line, and sews them into a kaleidoscopic hexagon motif. | Use this for a repeated-print design rather than separate appliquéd hexagons. Its fabric requirements and alignment work differ from the single placemat project. |
| Embroidered motif | Advanced Embroidery Designs describes a central fabric panel with borders, an embroidery motif, batting, backing, and binding. | Consider this when machine embroidery is part of the intended design; it is a distinct approach with additional supplies. |
For the first method, you can use a 1-inch-side hexagon template or cardstock templates. The AccuQuilt GO! Hexagon die is an optional cutting aid, not a requirement. The tutorial also provides template-based alternatives.
Gather fabric and supplies
For one 18-by-12-inch finished placemat, the AccuQuilt example specifies these cuts and materials:

- Scraps or fat quarters for the hexagons.
- One fat quarter of natural linen or solid quilting cotton for the top, cut to 18 by 12 inches.
- One fat quarter for the backing, cut to 19 by 13 inches.
- Batting cut to 18.5 by 12.5 inches.
- Seventy-five inches of binding.
The tutorial’s notions include hexagon templates or cardstock, clips, a hand-sewing needle and thread for basting, a fabric glue stick, matching thread, pearl cotton embroidery floss, and a wide-eye hand needle for the floss. For the fused option, add fusible web and follow its package directions.
These quantities belong to the single-placemat appliqué example, not every hexagon project. A separate American Quilter’s Society stack-n-whack project makes four placemats and calls for 2 to 2.5 yards of a print with a 12-inch repeat, 1 1/8 yards of backing, 1/2 yard of binding, and four 20-inch batting squares. Do not combine those quantities with the appliqué example.

- Hexagons and a base make this cute little bag that is perfect for a night out - be it 'trick or treating' or not.
Prepare and arrange the hexagons
Cut the shapes
The AccuQuilt tutorial starts with 3.5-inch-wide strips or 3.5-inch squares cut from scraps, then cuts the hexagons. Its illustrated tree uses ten hexagons and one trunk hexagon; that count is for the pictured layout, not a general requirement. For a different contemporary arrangement, choose the number and spacing that suit your top.
Make folded, basted hexagons
- Center each template on the fabric and fold the fabric edges around it.
- Clip the corners as needed, baste the folded fabric, and press the shape.
- If the edges or corners do not hold their shape, the tutorial suggests starch or a starch alternative.
- Remove the template after pressing. Keep the basted fabric shape intact for placement.
Or make fused raw-edge hexagons
- Fuse 2.5-inch squares of fusible web to the fabric, following the product’s instructions.
- Trim the fused fabric and cut the hexagons with the smallest die shape, or use an appropriate template-based cutting method.
- Arrange the shapes on the top, then fuse them in place according to the fusible product’s directions.
Lay out the design
Find the center of the top and arrange the shapes with the spacing you want. The tutorial uses fabric glue to hold the shapes in place. Its tree trunk is centered 1.5 inches from the lower edge, with a 1/4-inch gap between hexagons; these are placement choices for that tree design, not required measurements. A contemporary everyday version can instead use a single row, a loose cluster, or a repeating arrangement and a coordinated palette.

Layer, stitch, quilt, and bind
- Build the quilt sandwich. Place the backing, batting, and top together, with the top facing up. The example backing and batting are cut larger than the 18-by-12-inch top to allow for trimming.
- Baste the layers. Secure the sandwich with basting adhesive or pins so the layers stay aligned while stitching.
- Stitch the hexagon edges. Sew around each hexagon 1/8 inch from its edge, stitching through the top, batting, and backing as in the AccuQuilt tutorial.
- Add the perimeter hand stitch. The tutorial demonstrates a large stitch using pearl cotton, placed 3/4 inch from the raw edge.
- Square the placemat. Trim the quilted piece to an even shape before binding. The example’s finished size is 18 by 12 inches.
- Bind the raw perimeter. Attach binding using your preferred method to enclose the edges. For a different hexagon placemat construction, the American Quilter’s Society tutorial demonstrates mitered binding at 120-degree corners.
Sources and project scope
The appliqué steps and single-placemat measurements come from the AccuQuilt tutorial published October 26, 2015: Hexagon Tree Quilted Placemat. The repeated-print alternative and its four-placemat material quantities are from the American Quilter’s Society tutorial published January 12, 2021: Hexagon Placemat Tutorial. The embroidery-based approach is described by Advanced Embroidery Designs; its publication date is not stated here.
