In a typical U.S. home, a light switch is commonly installed about 48 inches from the finished floor to the center of the switch. That is a residential convention, not a nationwide code requirement. The right height for a particular project depends on local code, the people using the switch, and whether accessibility standards apply.
What is the typical light-switch height?
For ordinary residential placement, a consumer home-improvement reference reports about 48 inches from the finished floor to the switch’s center as common practice. Measure to the center of the switch, not its top or bottom, and use the finished floor as the reference point. This convention is not a universal legal requirement. Source
How high should a switch be for a home modification?
For an added or relocated switch in a home-modification project, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development suggests a height between 36 and 48 inches. Choose within that range based on the occupants’ reach and needs; this practical guidance does not replace applicable building code. HUD home-modification guidance
What height applies in an ADA-covered accessible location?
The ADA Standards apply to covered operable parts in accessible elements, routes, rooms, and spaces—not automatically to every switch in every private home. The U.S. Access Board identifies light switches as examples of controls covered by the operable-parts provisions. Section 309.3 states: “Operable parts shall be placed within one or more of the reach ranges specified in 308.” ADA Standards, sections 205 and 309 Access Board guidance

Unobstructed side reach
For an unobstructed side reach, the 2010 ADA Standards set a reach range from 15 inches minimum to 48 inches maximum above the finish floor. This is a range for covered accessible controls, not a direction to place every switch at either limit. 2010 ADA Standards, section 308
Side reach over an obstruction
When an obstruction affects the approach, the permitted high reach can be lower. For the cited condition—an obstruction more than 10 inches and no more than 24 inches deep—the maximum high side reach is 46 inches, subject to the standard’s full reach and geometry conditions. Check the applicable section rather than applying 46 inches without regard to the installation. Access Board reach-range guidance

Operation matters as well as height
Covered operable parts must be usable with one hand, without tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist. The activation force may not exceed 5 pounds under the cited ADA standard. A switch style that is easier for the intended user to operate may help, but placement and switch choice alone do not establish compliance. ADA Standards, section 309

Not as a universal U.S. residential rule based on the sources cited here. The reviewed 2021 International Residential Code excerpt addresses device installation but does not specify a general wall-switch mounting height. Model-code adoption and local amendments vary, so ask the local building department or authority having jurisdiction which requirements apply to your project. 2021 International Residential Code excerpt

How to choose a height for your project
- Check the applicable rules. Confirm locally adopted code and amendments with the authority having jurisdiction; determine whether the switch is in a location covered by accessibility requirements.
- Identify who will use the switch. For an occupant-focused home modification, consider HUD’s suggested 36-to-48-inch range and the user’s comfortable reach.
- Measure from the finished floor to the switch center. If using the common residential convention, target about 48 inches. For an accessible location, check the applicable reach range, approach, and any obstruction against the ADA Standards.
- Verify usability and installation details. Consider how the switch operates and have wiring or relocation work done in compliance with applicable electrical requirements.
