Materials and tools for a cardboard raffle spinner
The StormTheCastle example uses a 16-inch wheel made from two cardboard circles, with a straw-and-dowel axle and toothpick pegs around the edge. Its supply list calls for a cardboard box large enough to cut the circles, hot glue for most assembly, and a knife for cutting.
- Cardboard box: the tutorial specifies a usable area at least 21 inches across, excluding flaps, and a box about 30 inches across including flaps.
- Hot glue and a cardboard-cutting knife.
- One plastic straw and one wooden dowel sized to slide inside the straw.
- Toothpicks and paint.
- A protractor, optional, for laying out evenly spaced sections.
- Two small disposable plastic cups, optional, to increase the sound.
The tutorial names a Surebonder PRO2-100 glue gun and an X-Acto Designer Series #1 blade as examples used by its author, not as independently compared or recommended products. Keep hot glue away from the straw: the tutorial warns it can melt the plastic.
How to make the raffle wheel
1. Cut and strengthen the wheel
Draw two 16-inch-diameter circles on cardboard and cut them out. Glue the circles together so the wheel has two layers. Work carefully with the cutting knife and keep the edges of the paired circles aligned.

2. Mark the sections
The example divides the wheel into 16 sections. Use a protractor to mark lines at 22.5-degree intervals, or estimate the divisions if you do not have one. The tutorial says you can choose fewer or more sections; keep the spacing as even as practical so the result is visually balanced.
3. Add the straw bearing and dowel axle
Make a hole at the center of the wheel and insert the plastic straw through it. Attach the straw with an adhesive that will not melt it; do not use hot glue for this step. Slide a wooden dowel through the straw. The straw acts as the bearing and the dowel as the axle, so choose a dowel that fits inside the straw without being too loose or too tight.

4. Install the pegs
Make small holes near the wheelâs perimeter, positioned to suit the divisions, and glue toothpicks through both cardboard layers. Trim the toothpicks to different lengths on the top and bottom as the tutorial describes. The pegs are part of the design that makes clicking sounds as the wheel turns.
5. Mount it on a base
Build and attach a stand or base before using the wheel. The source tutorial includes a base-construction section, but does not establish a tested base design, load capacity, or stability rating. Make sure the wheel is supported securely for your intended use rather than assuming a particular arrangement will work for every build.
