For a smoother spray-paint finish, prepare a clean, dry surface, choose paint made for that material, apply steady overlapping passes in light coats, and follow the can’s directions for drying, recoating, cleanup, and safety. Spray distance and other application conditions vary by product, so use the label on the can you’re using—not a universal rule.
1. Prepare the surface before opening the can
Paint adheres more reliably to a surface that is clean and dry. Remove dirt and loose material, and mask nearby areas with painter’s tape and a drop cloth where needed. Sanding can help on some projects, but follow the chosen product’s preparation instructions rather than sanding automatically.
Primer may be recommended for bare or porous materials. For example, Rust-Oleum’s glitter-paint label particularly recommends primer on bare wood and metal. Its furniture guidance also describes sanding and priming for suitable projects; those directions are product- and project-specific, not a requirement for every spray-paint job. See the glitter paint label and Rust-Oleum’s furniture guidance.
Lead-paint caution: Scraping or sanding old paint may release toxic lead dust. The glitter-paint label includes this warning. If you suspect a coating contains lead, do not disturb it casually; follow applicable lead-safe guidance.

2. Match the paint to the surface and setting
Check the product label and description for the material it is intended to coat, whether it is suitable for indoor or outdoor use, and the finish you want. “Multi-surface” does not mean every paint works on every material. Rust-Oleum Universal Satin, for example, lists wood, plastic, metal, concrete, and vinyl—but that claim applies to that product, not spray paint generally. Consult its product page and the current can label to confirm suitability for your project.
Use primer when the paint’s instructions recommend it for your surface. A primer is not an automatic extra step: compatibility and preparation requirements differ among products.

3. Control the spray pass
Shake the can as directed. Hold it at the distance specified on its label, keep it moving while spraying, and overlap each pass slightly so coverage stays even. Start and finish each pass just beyond the workpiece when practical; this helps avoid concentrating paint at an edge.
There is no single correct distance for all aerosol paint. Rust-Oleum’s Universal Satin page gives 8–12 inches; its glitter-paint label gives 12–14 inches; and its 2X Ultra Cover guidance gives 10–16 inches. These are directions for those specific products, not interchangeable recommendations. Check the current label for your can. 4. Build coverage with light coats
Use light, even passes rather than trying to cover everything in one heavy coat. Let each coat dry and add another only when the label says it is appropriate. This approach helps limit runs and drips; heavy application can also contribute to finish problems. Rust-Oleum’s troubleshooting guidance connects heavy coats and unsuitable conditions with defects such as cracks, wrinkles, and bubbles.
If you spot a missed area, resist the urge to flood it with paint. Keep your passes steady and build coverage gradually within the product’s drying and recoat directions.

5. Follow the product’s drying and safety directions
Drying time, recoat windows, and acceptable temperature and humidity conditions vary by product. Follow the chosen can’s current instructions for all of them; recoating too soon or spraying outside the stated conditions can contribute to wrinkles or cracks. Do not assume that a surface is ready for another coat just because it feels dry.
Use the product only with the ventilation its label requires. Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area when directed, keep fresh air moving during application and drying, avoid breathing spray mist or vapors, and remove ignition sources as instructed. Rust-Oleum’s frosted-glass label, for instance, says “Use only with adequate ventilation” and “Do not breathe dust, vapors or spray mist”; it also gives product-specific warnings about ignition and respiratory protection. Follow the safety label for your paint rather than applying one product’s precautions to every aerosol. See the frosted-glass label.

Use the label’s directions for cleanup as well. If a nozzle clogs, do not probe its stem with a pin or other object. The glitter-paint label directs users to remove and rinse the nozzle in an appropriate solvent, but the right solvent depends on the product; use only the cleanup method specified for your can.
What to check when the finish goes wrong
- Runs or drips: Heavy application is a likely contributor. Use lighter passes and keep the can moving continuously.
- Cracks or wrinkles: Heavy coats, recoating before the stated window, or spraying outside the product’s temperature and humidity conditions can contribute. Check the can and follow its schedule.
- Bubbles: On porous surfaces, primer may help with gloss or semi-gloss paint, according to Rust-Oleum’s troubleshooting guidance. Confirm that primer is compatible with your surface and paint.
- Clogged nozzle: Follow the product’s cleanup instructions. Do not insert a pin or other object into the nozzle stem.
For broader defect guidance, see Rust-Oleum’s troubleshooting article. Product labels and formulas may change, so use the directions on the current can.
