BikeRadar’s October 2026 review gives the Smith Forefront 3 4.5 stars, with its strongest praise reserved for comfortable, stable fit and build quality. The drawbacks matter: reviewers also find airflow underwhelming, and the helmet carries a premium price. It is a compelling trail helmet if its fit suits your head and you value its coverage and features; it is less convincing if you run hot or prioritize ventilation and value.
What the Forefront 3 is—and what the reviews say
The Smith Forefront 3 is a mountain bike helmet built around broad protective coverage and a feature-rich fit system. In BikeRadar’s review, Robin Weaver describes a flexible retention cradle that conforms around the back of the head. A BOA dial tensions a fiber cord through anchor loops, and Weaver found the helmet stable over rough trail. The reviewer also preferred the newer, more oblong shape to earlier Forefront generations for their medium-sized head. Those are one reviewer’s fit experiences, not a guarantee for every rider.
BikeRadar rated it 4.5 out of 5 in a review published October 6, 2026, praising construction, comfort, and useful features while identifying price and ventilation as weaknesses. Its first-person praise belongs to Weaver; it is not an independent test of this helmet by this article.
Fit and comfort: the strongest reason to choose it
BikeRadar’s reviewer found the cradle comfortable and the helmet secure on rough rides. BikeMag’s reviewer also found the medium comfortable, while noting that fit depends on head shape and describing Smith helmets as better suited to oval-shaped heads. Neither experience settles how the Forefront 3 will fit you: try it on, check for pressure points, and use Smith’s current sizing information for your region.

BikeRadar lists three sizes—S, M, and L. BikeMag reports a head-circumference range of 51–62 cm, but regional charts and individual fit can differ. Do not rely on that range alone to select a size.
Ventilation: the clearest tradeoff
Smith lists 20 fixed vents and AirEvac ventilation, and claims airflow is increased by 25 percent. That percentage is Smith’s product claim, not an independent comparative test result. In use, the reviewers’ experience is more qualified: BikeRadar says Koroyd across the large vents restricts airflow on hard climbs, while BikeMag’s hot-running tester found ventilation underwhelming and reported substantial sweat. BikeRadar’s reviewer still found the helmet comfortable enough for regular use, including in hot weather.

If you routinely climb hard in heat or know you run hot, ventilation should weigh heavily in your decision. The Forefront 3’s vent count and airflow claim do not erase the hands-on reports that it can feel warm.
Features for trail riding
Smith’s product page describes complete KOROYD coverage, Mips Air Node integrated into the padding, and a complete internal roll cage. Smith characterizes KOROYD as lightweight, energy-absorbing protection and says Mips Air Node is intended to reduce rotational forces from angled impacts. These are design and manufacturer descriptions, not promises of injury prevention.

The practical feature set includes BOA 360 adjustment, a three-position visor, eyewear storage at the front and rear, and camera- and light-mount compatibility, according to Smith. BikeRadar reports that goggles fit under the visor. Its reviewer found the front eyewear channels worked best with straight glasses arms; rear storage was less secure. BikeMag notes a conventional buckle rather than a Fidlock magnetic buckle—a convenience preference, not a safety criticism.
Protection claims, standards, and independent test context
Smith says the helmet complies with the US CPSC bicycle helmet standard for people age five and older, CE EN 1078, and AS/NZS2063. Check the label on the specific helmet sold in your market for the applicable certification.

OutdoorGearLab reports its own impact-test scores for the Forefront 3: 6.5 overall, 6.3 for slow-impact testing, and 7.1 for high-speed testing. It described the overall result as middle of the pack in its test group. These scores reflect that outlet’s equipment, scoring method, and comparison set; they are not a medical prediction of performance in an individual crash.
TreeLine Review’s comparison table does not list a Virginia Tech rating for the Forefront 3, and OutdoorGearLab’s table leaves its Virginia Tech entry blank. The cited comparison sources therefore provide no listed Virginia Tech rating for this model; that should not be read as a claim about every database or future listing.

Is the Smith Forefront 3 worth the price?
Published prices vary by market and source. BikeRadar cited £250 in its 2026 UK review; OutdoorGearLab and BikeMag cited $300 in US coverage. These are review-time price snapshots, not a guarantee of current local price or availability.
The value verdict depends on what you prioritize. BikeRadar considers the construction and comfort worthy of the UK asking price. OutdoorGearLab finds $300 difficult to justify given its middle-of-the-pack impact results and airflow concerns. Before buying, compare the current price against the features and fit you will actually use—not a single score or feature in isolation.
How it compares with alternatives
TreeLine Review describes the POC Cularis as more breathable and the Forefront 3 as offering more coverage; in its comparison, it calls the Cularis five-star Virginia Tech rated and the Forefront 3 not rated or listed. OutdoorGearLab identifies the Lazer Coyote Kineticore as a lower-priced, strong-scoring alternative in its own test set. These are publication-specific comparisons, not exhaustive rankings.
When comparing trail helmets, weigh head shape and fit, coverage, ventilation, weight, standards and independently reported impact testing, eyewear or goggle compatibility, and your local price. A helmet that fits securely and comfortably is more useful to your decision than assuming one technology or rating alone settles the choice.
