That is a target, not a confirmed date for passenger service: construction must be followed by system installation, testing and integration. The planned elevated line will run from JLN Stadium to Infopark and SmartCity via Kakkanad.
What is Kochi Metro Phase II?
Phase II is a planned elevated metro corridor linking central Kochi with Kakkanad and the Infopark and SmartCity employment hubs. KMRL describes it as 11.2 km with 11 stations; the Union Cabinet’s 2022 approval specifies 11.17 km and the same number of stations. The slight length difference reflects the figures as reported by each source, rather than a different station count or route.
The project is distinct from Kochi Metro’s operational Blue Line and from Kochi Water Metro. KMRL says Phase II is intended to serve the district headquarters, CSEZ, KINFRA and Rajagiri Vidyapeetham as well as Infopark and SmartCity. The planned transport links include buses, Kochi Water Metro and public bicycle sharing.
When is the corridor expected to be completed and open?
The latest located progress account, published by Onmanorama on 22 September 2026, reported that KMRL was targeting full-corridor commissioning in August 2027. The account also said an earlier plan for opening a partial section had been abandoned. This is the latest reported target, not a guaranteed date or a separately confirmed public-service launch date.

The schedule has shifted. Kerala’s Economic Review 2025 listed December 2027 as the full-commissioning target and November 2026 as the previous scheduled completion. The later August 2027 target comes from 2026 reporting attributed to KMRL; it should be understood as a revised forecast, not a settled commitment.
Construction completion is not the same as commissioning
A June 2026 report by The New Indian Express said civil work was expected to finish by the following June, with testing, commissioning and system integration still to come. Completing structures and civil works is therefore an intermediate milestone. Passenger service depends on completing and checking the systems as well as the corridor itself.

What was the latest reported construction progress?
In its 22 September 2026 account, Onmanorama reported that all 2,444 specialised steel rail pieces for the line had arrived. Each was reported as 18 metres long, with the pieces amounting to 44 track kilometres and around 2,700 metric tonnes. Delivery means the rails are available; it does not mean track installation is complete. The report said laying would proceed progressively as elevated sections were completed and handed over.
The earlier New Indian Express account is a dated snapshot, not a current progress measurement. As of its 11 June 2026 report, station foundation work was complete, about 85% of viaduct piling had been completed, and nearly 3.5 km of superstructure had been launched. The same report described utility relocation, phased land handovers and coordination in a dense urban corridor as execution challenges.

What route and scope were approved?
The Union Cabinet approved the JLN Stadium-to-Infopark corridor via Kakkanad on 7 September 2022. The approval specifies 11.17 km and 11 stations; KMRL’s project overview rounds the length to 11.2 km. These are the official project-scale figures in the respective sources. A shorter 10.58 km and 10-station figure appeared in one June 2026 news report, but it does not match the Cabinet-approved scope or KMRL’s project overview.
The Union Cabinet announcement describes a total completion cost of ₹1,957.05 crore. This is the approved overall project cost, not simply the value of a civil-construction contract. The approval’s cost and financing structure includes land and rehabilitation costs, state taxes, interest and front-end fees, and PPP components, alongside base project funding. Of the base cost, 60% was assigned to loans from bilateral or multilateral agencies, with the balance comprising central and state equity and subordinate debt.
Why does the project matter to Kakkanad?
The corridor is planned to connect central Ernakulam with a cluster of major workplaces and public destinations around Kakkanad, including Infopark, SmartCity, the district headquarters, CSEZ, KINFRA and Rajagiri Vidyapeetham. Its intended value is not only the rail link: KMRL also describes integration with buses, water transport and public bicycle sharing, giving passengers planned connections to other parts of the transport network.
