Can Concrete Store Energy While Supporting a Building? What the 2025 Study Actually Demonstrated

MIT researchers reported carbon–cement supercapacitors designed to store energy while bearing loads. The 2025 prototype was cast, not 3D printed, and remains a research demonstration rather than a building-ready product.

A carbon–cement composite reported in a 2025 MIT study can store electrical energy as a supercapacitor while supporting mechanical loads. But the energy-storing prototype was made with cast electrodes, not 3D printed. The study presents a promising architectural proof of concept—not a ready-to-use building material or a system shown to power an entire building.

How can concrete store electrical energy?

The material, called electron-conducting carbon concrete (ec³), combines cement with conductive carbon black. The carbon forms a conductive network through the cementitious matrix; an electrolyte allows ions to move and charge to be stored. Current collectors and cell components complete the device. In other words, ordinary concrete does not automatically act as a storage device: the researchers designed and assembled electrodes and cells from a specific composite.

The device is a supercapacitor, not a conventional battery. The distinction matters because its structure and charge-storage behavior are different. The authors describe the approach as combining mechanical robustness with electrochemical energy storage in components that can also bear loads. The study by Stefaniuk, Weaver, Ulm, and Masic appeared online September 29, 2025, in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and in the journal’s October 7, 2025 issue.

What did the researchers build and measure?

The study reports a 10-fold increase in supercapacitor energy density compared with the group’s earlier designs. That comparison is with the authors’ previous designs, not with every commercial energy-storage technology.

For a stacked prototype, the researchers connected 12 cells in series. The module reached 12 V, with approximately 49.8 F capacitance and a reported energy density of 304 Wh/m³. Each electrode in the described module was about 10 mm thick and had an area of approximately 144 cm². These figures describe the researchers’ prototype module, not a whole wall or building.

The paper also reports a 9 V arch prototype that integrates energy storage into a load-bearing architectural element. The authors’ significance statement says that, through nanoscale 3D imaging, electrolyte optimization, and multicell stacking, they demonstrated high-voltage energy-storing concrete components capable of powering devices and supporting mechanical loads. That is a laboratory and architectural proof of concept; it does not show that a complete building can be powered by the material.

Was the energy-storing cement 3D printed?

No. The PNAS study describes cast electrodes and assembled cells; it does not report 3D printing the energy-storage prototype. The title’s “3D-printed” wording can therefore be misleading if taken to describe how the MIT device was manufactured.

3D concrete printing is a separate construction method that deposits material in layers. It may eventually offer ways to shape or integrate components, but printing a structure does not itself give cement energy-storage properties. NIST says more knowledge is needed about the performance of 3D-printed concrete structures under designed loading scenarios. Its work addresses the broader engineering and measurement questions for printed construction, not the ec³ energy-storage prototype. NIST’s additive construction project page was updated March 18, 2026.

What remains unknown about using it in buildings?

The reported results establish research prototypes, not a product-ready structural energy-storage system. The evidence does not establish long-term service life, building-code approval, cost competitiveness, commercial availability, or use in occupied buildings. Nor does it establish full building-scale energy capacity. These are important deployment questions for any material expected to serve simultaneously as a structural component and an electrical device.

  • Structural validation: A component that carries load in a prototype still needs validation for the loads, connections, durability, and conditions required in a real building.
  • Printing and interfaces: If the material were adapted for additive construction, layer interfaces and printed mixture behavior would need their own assessment. NIST identifies gaps in knowledge for designing printed structures for specific loading scenarios.
  • Energy-system design: Voltage, capacitance, energy density, usable energy, and the scale of the installed system all matter. A module’s reported volumetric energy density alone does not establish how much useful energy a building could rely on.
  • Environmental impact: Cement content, material substitutions, manufacturing, and the life-cycle boundary affect environmental comparisons. Results from other printed-concrete studies cannot be transferred automatically to ec³.

How does this relate to 3D-printed concrete’s other claims?

Separate research reviews describe material-efficiency opportunities in some topologically optimized 3D-printed concrete designs, including up to 70% material savings in those designs. That figure is not an energy-storage result and does not mean every printed structure uses less material. The review also notes a trade-off: printable mixtures can require high cement content, which can increase embodied carbon. Zhang et al.’s 2025 review covers these design and materials issues.

Likewise, findings about lower-carbon mixes in printed walls concern different materials and study boundaries. A 2025 study reported up to 72% lower carbon footprint versus plain cement for the supplementary-cementitious-material wall assemblies it examined; that result is not about ec³ or the PNAS prototypes. Bradford et al.’s wall-material study evaluates those specific assemblies. These examples illustrate why energy storage, structural performance, manufacturing method, and environmental impact should be assessed separately rather than treated as one general claim about “smart” concrete.
