For current Champaign County road closures and detours, check the Illinois Department of Transportation’s live road-closure and construction maps immediately before leaving. Road conditions can change quickly, and the available live-map page does not establish a definitive countywide list of active impacts. IDOT’s project pages do, however, outline major upcoming and recently reported work—especially the planned U.S. 45 improvements at Flatville and Leverett roads.
How to check current Champaign County road closures
Use IDOT’s Road Closures page to reach its current closure and road-construction maps. Check close to departure, particularly if your trip depends on a state highway, because work-zone conditions and traffic control can change. The information available here does not confirm which specific Champaign County roads are closed or restricted today.
For county highway notices, consult the Champaign County Highway Department’s documents page. Its 2026 bid notices cover bridge-deck replacements, culvert work, resurfacing and maintenance. A bid notice shows procurement activity; it is not, by itself, confirmation that work has started or that a road closure or detour is in effect.
U.S. 45 at Flatville Road and Leverett Road: planned J-turn work
IDOT’s U.S. 45 project page describes planned improvements at two intersections on the four-lane divided highway. The project would replace the existing full-access, at-grade intersections with J-turns, also known as restricted crossing U-turns (RCUTs), and add auxiliary-lane widening. The design is intended to reduce crossing conflicts by having drivers cross one direction of traffic at a time.

What the project schedule and traffic plan say
IDOT lists summer 2026 as the earliest expected start, with work expected to continue through summer 2027 and pause for winter 2026/2027. The forecast says one lane in each direction on U.S. 45 will remain open and access to both intersections will be maintained. These are project expectations, not confirmation of the traffic pattern in effect on a particular day; check the live map before driving.
Why IDOT is changing the intersections
IDOT’s project page reports that 75% of crashes at Flatville Road involved eastbound or westbound vehicles colliding with northbound or southbound vehicles. At Leverett Road, the corresponding figure is 76%. For Leverett, IDOT also reports nine Type A injury crashes and one fatal crash over the preceding ten years, and says accidents declined after lighting was installed. These are intersection-specific figures reported on IDOT’s project page, not countywide crash rates or a measure of current conditions.

The agency estimates the project cost at $6.1 million and says it will acquire about 0.7 acres of right-of-way and make utility adjustments. Work can still affect travel even when a lane remains open: expect possible temporary traffic control around the intersections and verify access before setting out.
I-57/I-74 interchange: dated progress update
In its 2025 year-end recap, IDOT reported that two flyover ramps had opened during 2025: westbound I-74 to southbound I-57 in August, and eastbound I-74 to northbound I-57 in November. The same recap described the $251.8 million reconstruction as expected to be mostly complete by the end of 2026, with final striping and landscaping continuing into 2027. That is a forecast published in 2025, not a verified statement of the interchange’s status on October 7, 2026. Check IDOT’s live maps for current restrictions before choosing a route.

Other projects shown in an older Champaign-area map
IDOT’s July 2025 Champaign-area project map provides historical context, not a current construction schedule. It listed:
- The I-72 bridge over I-57 in Champaign, with crossover traffic on I-72 and occasional overnight I-57 lane closures.
- U.S. 45 resurfacing from Springfield Avenue to Curtis Road, with occasional and overnight lane closures.
- Old Illinois 49 over I-72 at White Heath.
- The I-72 bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad near Monticello, with one lane in each direction during prestage work.
Those descriptions do not establish that any of the listed work remains active in October 2026. Use the live map for trip planning rather than relying on an older project map.

Safer driving through active work zones
IDOT’s work-zone guidance recommends slowing down, obeying posted speed limits, staying alert and moving over for workers when possible. Leave extra room around heavy vehicles so their drivers have space to adjust, and avoid following closely or cutting in front of them. IDOT identifies distraction and speed as leading causes of work-zone crashes and severe or fatal injuries.
