Their experience included field rounds at a sustainable microgrid and carport solar installation, alongside project documentation, estimating and construction-control tasks.
Two campus projects provided the setting
Middlesex College’s October 5, 2026 announcement and DCO Energy’s October 6 account describe the same internship: five students joined DCO Energy’s program, which is part of its Competitive Edge community program. The college says the interns received direct exposure to active construction projects on its Edison campus.
The work took place at two locations:
- Sustainable Microgrid Project: east of the Physical Education building.
- Carport solar installation: in Parking Lot #1.
Middlesex College says the projects are intended to provide power to newly constructed buildings and the broader campus. The accounts do not say the installations are complete or already supplying power. Middlesex College’s announcement and DCO Energy’s account describe the projects and internship.
What the interns encountered in the field
The students participated in daily project rounds and observed work across several construction stages and trades, including:

- Concrete pours, excavation, backfilling and asphalt placement.
- Crane lifts, equipment installation and precast manhole installation.
- Electrical and underground utility work, thermal piping construction and carport solar construction.
The variety exposed students to how site work, equipment and infrastructure activities fit together on active projects. DCO Energy Project Manager Brendan Crowe said interns worked alongside engineers, construction superintendents, project managers, contractors and field personnel.

Office and project-control work complemented site rounds
The internship also included tasks that support construction planning and documentation. Students reviewed invoices, prepared construction takeoffs, completed daily field reports, worked on as-built documentation, tracked construction progress, marked up drawings and reviewed subcontractor submittals. They also explored engineering disciplines and completed practical construction-math exercises.

Those responsibilities offered a look at the information flow behind construction: project teams document conditions, check costs and quantities, record progress and review subcontractor materials as work advances. Samantha Rodriguez Godinez ’26, of New Brunswick, described helping a lead engineer organize bids for materials for a retaining wall:

Students connected coursework with professional roles
Xochitl Solano Romero ’26, a construction engineering technology student from New Brunswick, said she wanted to see how coursework applied to real projects and to learn from professionals about the roles involved in construction.

Kareem Rady, a civil engineering student from Carteret, described the internship as his first job in his field and an opportunity to give back to the college. He also reflected on the workplace learning he gained:

College leaders likewise presented the program as a way to connect student learning with campus projects. President Mark McCormick said the experience allowed students to work with professionals while contributing to the campus. Vice President of Academic Affairs Dionne Miller highlighted exposure to the engineering profession and the development of communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills.

These accounts share student and institutional perspectives; they do not report measured learning gains or compare internship outcomes with classroom instruction. Middlesex College lists related programs including Civil Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Engineering Science, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Process Technology and Surveying Engineering Technology; the accounts do not identify all five interns’ programs.
