AOM Small Project: Lake Marion Restoration — What ENR’s Award Entry Confirms

Lake Marion Restoration received an Award of Merit in Engineering News-Record’s 2026 MidAtlantic Best Projects program, in the Small Project category. ENR describes it as the culmination of a 20-year community-led effort focused on a 3-acre detention pond with diminished ecological function. The award listing does not identify the project’s location or explain its construction methods or measured results.

What ENR’s award entry says about the project

In its October 6, 2026 listing, Engineering News-Record (ENR) states: “The project culminated a 20-year community-led effort to restore the 3-acre detention pond that had sustained diminished ecological function.” The 20 years describe the community-led effort; the listing does not establish that construction lasted 20 years.

That description establishes the project’s general purpose and setting: restoration of a detention pond whose ecological function had declined. It does not specify what functions were diminished or how the pond was changed.

Where is this Lake Marion?

The accessible ENR project listing does not provide a municipality, state, or waterbody jurisdiction. The name alone is not enough to identify which Lake Marion is meant, so the project should not be assigned to a particular location without additional documentation.

What did the restoration change?

ENR’s brief listing does not describe design or construction interventions, such as excavation, shoreline work, planting, or changes to water control. It also gives no measured before-and-after ecological results. Claims about habitat gains, water quality, flood performance, or species recovery cannot be drawn from the available project description.

How the recognition fits ENR’s 2026 MidAtlantic program

ENR’s awards overview says judges considered nearly 75 projects from Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia, selecting 35 projects across 16 categories. Eligible work had to be completed between May 1, 2025, and May 31, 2026. These are program-wide facts; they do not establish Lake Marion Restoration’s construction schedule or location.
