Under-Construction Pathankot–Mandi Highway: Effects on Daily Life

Construction is affecting daily travel on some reported stretches of the Pathankot–Mandi highway, with residents describing muddy, congested roads, difficulty for ambulances and school buses, and weaker trade when traffic slows. The accounts are local rather than corridor-wide: project packages are at different stages, and the available reports do not establish that construction caused a nearby landslide.

Why construction status varies along the highway

The Pathankot–Mandi highway is being developed in packages, so one progress figure or completion date cannot describe the whole route. In its January 2026 monitoring report, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation recorded the 5.185-kilometre Bijni–Mandi section, Package-VB, at 21% physical progress, with a target completion date of September 2027. Those figures apply to that package and that monitoring snapshot, not the entire corridor. MoSPI’s monitoring reports

Other sections have had different project stages. A November 2024 parliamentary response listed the Rajol–Thanpuri Package-IIB detailed project report as under progress. Separately, NHAI’s implementation status as of 1 March 2025 listed nine foot overbridges under construction on the Kiratpur–Nerchowk section, including the Sundernagar bypass. That is related corridor infrastructure, but it is not the same package or chainage as the Pathankot–Mandi works discussed in local reports. Parliamentary response · NHAI implementation status

How road conditions have affected daily travel

A report by The Tribune on 27 August 2025 focused on the Ghat Nalu–Rajol stretch after persistent rain. It described muddy road conditions and traffic jams, with residents reporting that ambulances and school buses struggled to pass. These are accounts from the people interviewed, not measured travel-time or access data for the full highway.

Pawan Thakur, whom the report identified as a Rajol resident, said: “The road becomes almost unmotorable after every spell of rain. Even ambulances and school buses are struggling to move.” His statement conveys a local experience; it should not be read as an official assessment of road passability. The Tribune, 27 August 2025

What congestion can mean for local businesses

On the same Ghat Nalu–Rajol stretch, The Tribune reported that shopkeepers and transport operators said reduced traffic and snarls were hurting business. The report documents those interviewees’ concerns, but provides no survey or revenue figures to quantify the effect or show how widely it was felt.

Dust complaints and the limits of the evidence

On 28 May 2026, Amar Ujala reported public complaints about dust and dirt during construction on the Mandi–Pathankot highway, along with a warning that people would block the road daily if no solution was found. This records a reported complaint and protest threat; it is not an air-quality measurement and does not establish exposure levels or health effects. Amar Ujala, 28 May 2026

The Kotla landslide: a reported closure, not proof of cause

The Tribune reported that a landslide near Kotla blocked the highway for nearly 12 hours on 7 August 2025, stranding vehicles. Its account noted heavy rainfall and local criticism of hill cutting and disaster preparedness. The report does not establish a technical cause for the slide, so the event cannot be presented as proof that construction triggered it or as evidence of a typical delay. The Tribune, 7 August 2025

What readers can conclude

  • Official progress and target dates are package-specific: the January 2026 figure of 21% and September 2027 target refer only to Bijni–Mandi Package-VB.
  • Local reporting gives concrete accounts of mud, jams, difficulties for school and emergency transport, and business concerns on Ghat Nalu–Rajol.
  • A separate 2026 report records dust complaints but no air-quality readings.
  • The nearly 12-hour Kotla closure was one reported rainfall-associated landslide event; it establishes neither an incident rate nor a construction cause.
